So you’ve decided to take up surfing after a few tries and you’ve got the stoke. Congratulations! Unless you’ve been blessed with a hand-me-down, you’re probably now in the market for a sled of your own but you’re not really sure where to start, right? Well, you’ll want a board that’s stable, easy to paddle, doesn’t make you look like a total kook, and one that can take a beating. So consider legendary surfer and shaper Donald Takayama’s Egg Surfboard from Surftech.

But before we get into why you should get an Egg as your first board, you should first know who Donald Takayama was.

He was a champion longboarder from Hawai’i, who, as a twelve-year-old, fled the isles for Los Angeles so he could learn how to shape surfboards. And he’s shaped for some of the best in the world, like eight-time world champion Joel Tudor, who helped revive longboard surfing in the 1990s.

Because of his place in surfing history, Takayama’s original hand-shaped boards are some of the most sought after and most expensive boards in the world.

Which brings us back to the Egg. Available in two sizes – 7’2” or 7’6” – and made from a carbon composite that makes it lightweight but also incredibly strong, it appeals to novices and experts alike. Because of its egg-like shape, you get an incredibly easy to paddle and floaty board that’s still fun to rip even when your skills begin to level up.

The carbon composite construction of the board is also important to note because as a novice you’re going to drop the board, run it into things and maybe even forget to strap it to the roof of the car.

And really, what is there to say about that paint job? It’s timeless. So even if you decide that surfing isn’t really your thing, you’ve at least got something pretty to put on the wall.
