New details have dropped regarding Hulu’s upcoming new TV service. For a reported $39.99 a month, subscribers will have access to over 50 live channels, not to mention plenty of Hulu exclusives.
It appears that Hulu will now start collecting user data by default. In fact, under the “Sharing Information with Third Parties” section, Hulu includes a blurb on how it, “may disclose information from or about you without providing you a choice.” Sounds harsh, right?
What’s more alarming is that there doesn’t appear to be any opt-out clause. Under the new rules, Hulu clearly states that the only way to opt out of having your data collected is to stop using the service altogether.
That’s a far cry from other popular companies like Facebook and Google, which both collect data by default but give users the option to opt out easily. But while data collection has become something of a norm these past few years, the problem becomes exacerbated by the fact that Hulu also records your location data.
“We collect information when you use the Hulu Services or view Hulu advertising outside of the Hulu Services. Examples of this information may include your IP address, device, browser and software characteristics (such as type and operating system), location (which may include precise location data).”
Hulu’s new TV service is still in the production stages, so it’s possible these policies may undergo further changes. In the meantime, make sure to read the fine print.
