* Vitamin C is an “antioxidant powerhouse” according to dermatologist Dr. Neal Schultz
* Not all types of Vitamin C are created equal
* Learn how to store products to ensure they remain effective
Using Vitamin C topically has clinically-proven benefits to the skin in a wide range of areas, from softening fine lines to brightening dullness to free-radical protection, but like most effective products, not all Vitamin C products are created equal.
We sat down with NYC dermatologist Dr. Neal Schultz, the creator of the luxury skincare line BeautyRx by Dr. Schultz, to get the low down on why and how we should be using Vitamin C in our skincare regimen to ensure we’re getting the most out of it.
We know that Vitamin C is good for us when taken orally, but what are the benefits of using Vitamin C for our skin topically?
Topical antioxidants are one of the three essential daily skincare ingredients everyone has to use for younger, healthier looking glowing skin. Vitamin C is my favorite antioxidant, because it has the potential to be the most effective skin antioxidant when formulated properly, in addition to its other properties that no other topical antioxidant has (evening skin tone and increased collagen production for firming skin and reduced lines and wrinkles.)
Topical Vitamin C is the best topical antioxidant ingredient because of proven superior protective antioxidant efficacy and its other benefits, including collagen building for firming skin and its ability to brighten skin and even skin tone by blocking excessive brown melanin formation. When properly formulated as an ester — i.e. in our BeautyRx Triple Vitamin C Serum instead of the native acid form (ascorbic acid) — its efficacy is supercharged because of much greater absorption into the cells (where it does its magic) compared to other forms of Vitamin C. In addition, the ester form does not sting when applied to the skin, and makes it stable so it doesn’t turn brown and is as potent from the first drop to the last.
How do different types of Vitamin C vary?
They are almost all so different chemically as well as in efficacy. More research has been done on the ester of Vitamin C called tetrahexyldecylascorbate than any other form, proving superior efficacy. Forget about DIY products; you will be wasting your time.
What type of formulation and/or strength should we be looking for in Vitamin C skincare products?
Topical Vitamin C, when properly formulated as an ester (tetrahexyldecylascorbate) instead of the native acid form (ascorbic acid), is the most effective and fulfills all the potential of Vitamin C as an antioxidant and more.
What are the best practices for storing Vitamin C skincare to maximize its potency and shelf life?
[This] depends on the form of Vitamin C. If ascorbic acid, keep out of all daylight (has UV) in a dark area (inside medicine cabinet is fine) when not using. Keeping [the product] in the refrigerator may also prolong shelf life. When in the ester form, just keep out of direct sunlight, but [it] does not need to be stored in a dark or cold place.
Beauty editors and loyal customers alike all rave about the BeautyRx by Dr. Schultz Triple C Serum. What sets it apart from other luxury counterparts on the market?
Quite frankly, I see Triple Vitamin C Serum as superior because first and foremost, it’s extremely efficacious. I spent 15 years tinkering and manipulating the formula until I felt it was perfect – combining three potent forms of Vitamin C and ensuring a stable formula – and better than anything else on the market. Secondly, the texture is luxurious and lightweight but simultaneously moisturizing. It doesn’t have a sticky feeling like many other C products; it smoothly glides onto skin and absorbs seamlessly. And thirdly, it delivers incredible results. In a consumer perception study, 100% of the women who tested the product felt skin looked softer, brighter, smoother and more youthful. 100% of them.
I always say, when it comes to healthy, younger-looking skin, it’s not just about wrinkles. So much of it is about tone and texture – and those are both improved via our Triple Vitamin C Serum. The product is an antioxidant powerhouse.
