* D&G is in trouble again, this time over a new pair of sneakers
* Brand is slammed by body image activists on Instagram
* Critics are missing the joke and jumping to conclusions

Over the last few years, Dolce & Gabbana has stepped in the politically incorrect mud. In 2015, Domenico Dolce came under fire for comments that demeaned LGBT families. In 2016, D&G got burned for calling a pompom embellished slingback the Slave Sandal. Just last month, the brand was criticized after it (gasp) dressed Melania Trump for her official White House portrait.

D&G’s latest offense? Supposedly drawing a link between thinness and attractiveness on a new pair of sneakers. Stefano Gabbana posted an image from the label’s Fall 2017 shoe collection, showing a heavily embellished low top sneaker that features the phrase “I’M THIN & GORGEOUS.” It was a huge no-no for the anti-body shaming crowd, who accused the Italian brand of being irresponsible and not embracing inclusive designs.

I agree! More laughing, less judgement!

What the critics may have missed was the second bit of text, which reads, “SO FAB!”

The words aren’t an endorsement of any body shape. They’re a reference to the BBC comedy series, Absolutely Fabulous, that dates back to 1992. In Series 1, Episode 2, Edina Monsoon races to lose weight before an impending visit from former nemesis Penny Caspar-Morse, who in their youth tormented Edina for her weight problems.

Near the end of the episode, Edina’s sidekick Patsy Stone races to the kitchen with great news: Penny is blind, so she can’t tell that Edina is still two stones overweight. That is until after the closing credits, when during a drunken tirade Edina places Penny’s hands upon her waist and declares, “I am thin and gorgeous,” to which Penny replies, “Thin? Ha!”

Check out the full episode below. If you want to skip to the climactic scene, start watching at 26:00. And for goodness sake, sweetie dahlings, have a laugh once in a while. It’s fashion; it’s not meant to be so serious.
