* Costco will soon offer in-home grocery delivery to members
* Available to Tampa, FL customers, with plans of expansion
* Delivery in as a little as one hour to overnight
Making a trip to Costco often proves to be an even bigger hassle than trying to grocery shop on Sunday night at your local Trader Joe’s store. Between the horrendous parking lots and the never-ending lines at both checkout and the complimentary sample stands on every aisle, a quick trip to Costco for groceries can often turn into an all-day event. While the plethora of free samples are an added bonus for in-store shopping at the price per unit superstore, this may not be a good enough reason to keep customers coming back in, especially with the rise of newer and more convenient food delivery services like Amazon Fresh becoming increasingly popular.
But Costco is trying to improve. The bulk superstore will now be offering a door-to-door delivery with their new subscription service. Costco will be partnering with grocery delivery app, Shipt, to provide grocery and prescription drug delivery. Grocery delivery will reportedly take as little as an hour or overnight, deepening on when the order is placed. Considering an hour is the typical duration for finding a parking spot in their notoriously busy lots, the ability to dodge this step may be worth the subscription fee alone for many Costco members.
This new service will only be available to customers in Tampa, FL, with eventual plans of expansion throughout the rest of the U.S. by the end of 2017. In addition to the annual Costco membership fee, having access to this delivery service will cost an addition $99 per year. This is more expensive than the actual membership fee itself, but Shipt offers free shipping on all orders over $35 and over, and with Costco’s buy-in-bulk setup, orders totaling under $35 would be highly unlikely. In addition to grocery and prescription drugs, Costco’s service will also deliver other goods sold in store and online, including furniture, clothing and electronics.
This expansion follows a growing trend in e-commerce market competition for grocery home delivery. Other online grocery retailers including Amazon Fresh offer convenient ways to shop, with quick and easy delivery that has become the standard among avid and busy shoppers.
