Brooklyn perfumery D.S. & Durga have been making noise since they launched in 2009. Their unique approach to creating fragrances is a bit too hipster to be true, but once you’ve taken a whiff, you find yourself coming back for more.
“Mississippi Medicine,” a medium-bodied scent, comes across as a bit masculine with tones of smoke and wood. The core elements — or heart notes— of the Mississippi Medicine, which is described as being “based on the rituals of the proto-Mississippian death cult of the 1200s,” are comprised of cypress root, black pine and cascarilla bark. Incense, Spanish cade and birch tar make up the base notes, while red cedar, aldehydes and frankincense distillate round out the top notes.
Each bottle of fragrance from D.S. & Durga includes what amounts to liner notes that you once found in a CD. Established at the height of hipster DIY, the husband and wife duo behind the brand want you to know everything there is to know about the perfume you just purchased. They believe in “transparency” and just want you to know the backstory of the scent and why they did what they did. Is it a bit much? Sure. But we challenge you to find a brand more passionate about fragrance than D.S. & Durga.
Bottled in the USA, this fragrance is for the guy – or girl – who refuses to compromise, at least when it comes to smelling good – and, by extension, looking good. Alluring, mysterious and aggressive all at once, Mississippi Medicine is a scent that you’ll keep coming back to, time and time again.
