You might be thinking that any cutting board will get the job done in the kitchen. But the reality is there are a few factors to consider when picking out a cutting board, and we’ve gone ahead and compiled for you.

The first thing to consider is the material of the cutting board. Plastic is fine for most jobs and the fact that you can throw it into a dishwasher to disinfect it is quite convenient. But those little nicks and even larger dings aren’t as easy to clean, and can store bacteria. On the other hand, they’re easy to move, store and significantly lighter than wooden cutting boards.

Wooden cutting boards on the other hand are easy on your blades, anti-microbial by nature, and are often less porous than other materials. In other words, hardwoods like maple and teak won’t trap moisture or bacteria. Bamboo boards share all these properties too but because they tend to be a bit harder, they can dull blades quicker.

If you opt for a wooden board, you will want to prep it with a coating or two of mineral oil. You’ll also want to go with a bigger board in most cases. Here are 7 solid options.
