When it comes to smart snacking, diversity is the name of the game. Just as you would switch out your exercise routine every now and then, consider swapping out your current snack go-tos for something healthier — and more unique.
We love discovering new things at SPY — and yes, we are known around the office for being big snackers, too. That’s why we were thrilled when we got a couple of snack boxes delivered to us recently.
The idea of delivery services is nothing new, but having fresh, hand-picked snacks sent to your door each month is a little affordable luxury we can all subscribe to. Rather than repeating the same grocery staples you see all the time, sites like Love With Food and UrthBox, seek out the best new independent snack brands for you to try. It’s a great gift for foodies, and it’ll save you time having to source all these unique snacking items yourself.
For less than the price of a burger and fries, we got a box filled with everything from chocolates and chips, to crackers, granola and even dips and spreads. Many of the included brands were new to us, and the boxes come with coupons for each brand to let you redeem them if you find something you like. There was enough to go around the office — and enough variety to satisfy every member of our team.
Here’s what we got — and what we thought.
1. Love With Food Snack Box
Love With Food gives you organic, all-natural snacks delivered to your door. Started by a female entrepreneur, whose divorce inspired her to start fresh with a new career and new purpose, you’ll get 8-10 snacks in each box that are hand-selected for variety and taste. Love With Food promises that their snacks contain no artificial flavoring, coloring, or MSG, no trans fats and hydrogenated oils, and no high fructose corn syrup. You can also request gluten-free boxes if you’d like.
Our sample box had everything from dill pickle potato chips, to super tasty chocolate chip and granola bites. We also liked this chocolate chip protein peanut spread. It was recommended to have it with slices of fruit or in a smoothie, but we ate it straight from the package (don’t judge). There was savory and sweet, crunchy and chewy – enough to satisfy everyone’s tastebuds.
While we were familiar with pickle chips and fancy popcorn, none of us had tried any of the brands included in the Love With Food box before. The only negative was that there were less than a dozen items in the box, so for a hungry office, the snacks went within the hour (note to self: order the office subscription next time instead of the individual/home subscription).
Love With Food offers home delivery starting at just $7.99/month. Office plans get you at least 65 snacks and 10 varieties in each tray, and start at $99/month. Love With Foods donates a portion of the proceeds from every box to help fight childhood hunger, through organizations like Feeding America and The Global Food Banking Network. You can cancel your plans at any time.
2. UrthBox Snack Box
UrthBox is all about the delicious discovery of healthy and tasty new treats. You have the option of Classic, Gluten-Free, Vegan and Diet box options, and the company will send you foods, beverages and snacks that are NON-GMO, organic, and all-natural. UrthBox selects its snacks based on a strict internal ingredient, source, calorie, nutrition and manufacturing review. According to the site, only the highest scoring products make it into a box.
We got the vegan UrthBox, and it was filled with about a dozen items, ranging from nuts and chips, to seaweed, sweets and drinks (think Yerba Mate and tea). A few things were a little strange — like getting a dipping cup-sized sample of sunflower butter with nothing to spread it on, or a pack of chocolate energy chews (equivalent to two large coffees) but no “regular” chocolates or candy for those of us who wanted something sweet without the caffeine jolt — but overall, we were pretty impressed with the selection.
The vegan option was great, because it was an easy way to introduce alternative snacks to our team, especially since none of us are vegans in our day-to-day diet. There were a surprising number of vegan-friendly snacks and they all tasted great too. A few members of our staff expressed interest in Urth Box’s “Diet” box, which has a strong emphasis on weight loss metrics, including low calorie counts, low carbohydrate counts and low fat values. We’ll have to try that out next time.
As with the Love With Food box, we discovered a bunch of new brands that we hadn’t heard of before. The UrthBox also came with gift cards and coupons for many of the snacks, that we could redeem online or at our local store. It’s also a unique and conscious gift idea for foodies and vegans alike.
Above all, both snack boxes saved us a lot of time. Rather than having to go to the store and aimlessly look for something to munch on, we were able to just pick through a box of goodies that was delivered straight to our door — and desk. And for strict vegans, you don’t have to spend time reading labels to ensure that the snacks meet your dietary concerns — it’s all done for you.
UrthBox subscriptions start at just $19.99 a month. Office plans start at $199 a month, for 100+ snacks. If you see (or taste) something you like, you can re-order on the UrthBox site, earning “loyalty points” for discounts and freebies. You can cancel your plan at any time.
