Lived-In Review: I Took One Of Those MasterClass Courses and This Is What I Learned

I never really thought of myself as someone who was crafty in the kitchen. When I was eight years old, I decided to make my mom breakfast in bed and instead almost burned down the kitchen. I remember my mom, tongs in hand, forcefully yanking my crispy-burnt toast from the smoky toaster. The breakfast was a disaster, and like those two tiny pieces of toast, my culinary dreams went up in smoke.

It wasn’t until recently that I decided to give cooking another go. Chalk it up to Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen for reigniting my culinary creativity. Chef Ramsay is a sort of anti-hero hero, with his constant berating and almost painful sense of perfection. The way he’d yell and scream at both his chefs and customers was something I had never seen before. Needless to say, I was hooked the first time I watched it.

So when I got the opportunity to try MasterClass, Ramsay’s course was the first one I thought of. If you ever wanted to be a filmmaker, a novelist, an actor, photographer, painter, designer or any other artistic profession under the sun, MasterClass can give you an inside look at the craft. HOW IT WORKS

While every class I browsed offered something that caught my eye, it was Gordon Ramsay’s cooking class that I immediately signed up for. The course itself consists of 15 30-minute classes, with each course offering a unique lesson to help you grow as a chef. Whether it’s learning how to mix herbs, how to sharpen your knives, or even deep diving into Ramsay’s own delicious recipes, there’s a lot to take in.

What I liked most about these classes was how straightforward they were. There are no needless frills or bloated extras; just Chef Ramsay showing you how to make delicious meals in that classic I-know-what-the-hell-I’m-talking-about-so-you’d-better-pay attention voice of his. With easy-to-follow instructions and downloadable recipe guidelines for each course, he offers simple, straightforward and clear descriptions. For someone like me who still confuses tablespoons and teaspoons, it’s a breath of fresh air.

While I breezed through the first course, I decided to try my hand at Ramsay’s more advanced courses. The dishes, naturally, were more complex, but the classes move at a much faster pace as well. Still, it’s nice to know that there’s more to take in than just the basics.

THE VERDICT

Through MasterClass, you’re able to learn at your own pace, at your own time. Even better, you’re able to learn from seasoned industry professionals—idols you’ve likely looked up to and modeled your own specific careers after. And therein lies the beauty of it: By learning from recognized teachers you already know and follow, it’s almost as if you have an instant rapport with the instructor. Through Chef Ramsay’s cooking course, I already knew what to expect—his teaching style, his vocal cadence, the pace at which he moves—and that already helped me feel more accustomed to the course.

MasterClass gives you all the tools and guidance needed to learn a new skill. You don’t have to be an expert in a certain subject, hell, you don’t even have to be good. But with a little diligence, passion and dedication, you’re able to walk away knowing something new.

Before taking this course, I was of the mindset that it was always better to make one dish good then make a dozen dishes bad. Instead of trying to branch out and learn new recipes, I always felt safer sticking with my already pre-configured classics. But after a few hours and some trial and error, I’m now able to saute and puree, bake and broil. I’m even able to whip up such decadent classics like red wine pouched eggs with grilled mushrooms and pan-fried asparagus. 

It’s a far cry from mac n cheese.
