* A double duty sound machine with Bluetooth audio features
* Ten different fan and noise settings to choose from
* Compact design and small size makes it easy to travel with
Sometimes I need to listen to some sound to fall asleep, like having the TV on or putting on a podcast to help me drift away. In the past, I’ve tried using sound apps that play rain and fireside sounds, but after awhile, I found the pseudo-outdoorsy sounds to be more annoying than helpful.
During a recent two-week battle of nightly insomnia, my colleagues suggested that I try using a sound machine to help me fall – and stay – asleep. Desperate to get a much-needed full eight hours of beauty sleep, I decided it wouldn’t hurt to give one a shot.
I tested out the “LectroFan” White Noise And Fan Machine made by Adaptive Sound Technologies to see if it just might be cure to the my restless nights counting sheep.
The “LectroFan” is equipped with both a fan and white noise sound feature, with the ability to adjust pitches. You can choose from ten different fan sounds and ten ambient noise variations, including white noise, pink noise and brown noise. While I was familiar with the white noise and it’s noise-masking capabilities, I had never heard of pink or brown noise before. After some research, I found out while all three are linked with improved sleep, each type produces different noises and have different effects on brain activity.
According to Prevention, white noise is a type of sound that’s the product of a combination of different frequencies, so it’s best utilized to block out sudden disruptions or changes in sound, like your next door neighbor abruptly slamming a door. Pink noise produces a consistent and even frequency that sounds like “…rain falling on pavement, or wind rustling the leaves on a tree,” according to Jue Zhang, Ph.D, the author of a study assessing the affects of pink noise on sleep. Brown noise is an even deeper type of sound without high frequencies, and is associated with not only improved sleep but also better mental clarity the following day.
I tested a wide range of different sounds over the course of a few weeks, and while I found all to be effective, I am now switching between the white and pink settings, as the brown noise can be too aggressive for me personally. Using the “LectroFan” White Noise Machine, I can usually fall asleep before the 60 minute timer goes off. I also appreciate its compact design and small size, because it allows me to bring it with me when I’m travelling and has come in handy when I’ve had to stay at noisy hotels for business trips.
Another bonus is that the “LectroFan” is also designed with Wireless Bluetooth audio and a built-in microphone, so you can also use it to listen to your music and even take business calls from wherever you are. The only feature I wish it came with would be a remote control, which would allow you to adjust the sounds without having to turn over and reach for your night stand, but because it’s helped me fall asleep pretty quickly, it hasn’t been a huge issue.
Overall, I am 100% pleased with this sound machine, and I continue to use it on a nightly basis. This is a great option for anyone who struggles with trouble sleeping.
It seems I’m not the only one who feels this way either. I’ve spoken to new moms who use the “LectroFan” to help their newborns fall asleep, while friends of mine swear the sound machine helps them concentrate better in the office. The “LectroFan” is also one of the best-reviewed products on Amazon, with a 4.6 star rating across 8000 reviews.
