While the Dyson Pure Cool is not a new product freshly conceived for 2020, its design packs feature that seem ideally suited to these strange times. As the summer temperatures rise and more consumers seek out air quality monitors, a lot of people are giving the Dyson Pure Cool air-purifying fan a closer look.

That is, until they see the $400 price tag.

  • Is this smart fan worth your money?

Free of fast-moving parts beyond its smooth oscillation motion, the Pure Cool tower fan is safe for any living space. Its filter unit is easy to clean, and the magnetic remote control that attaches to the top of the unit allows the user to set everything from power to rotation to usage time.

Dyson is known for its innovative products, from its always in-demand Dyson Supersonic hairdryer to its range of popular stick vacuums. It’s certainly one of the most technologically advanced cooling fans for sale in 2020. However, you could buy a portable air conditioner for less, and a standard tower fan will cool down your room for $50 or less.

What We Liked About the Dyson Pure Cool

It’s impossibly quiet. We’re all so used to the incessant, even intrusive drone of room fans that it’s many white noise machines actually feature fan noises. The Dyson Pure Cool’s sound will never be a feature on any such machines because it barely makes one. Even at its highest setting with maximum oscillation, the air is pushed without being “whooshed.”

So if you aren’t a fan of most fan’s white noise, the Dyson is the perfect fan for you. It will cool down your room as it improves your indoor air quality, which is a seriously attractive combination.

Will the Dyson Pure Cool HEPA Filter Protect You From Coronavirus?

Most people would need a very good reason to drop $400 on a fan, but the coronavirus is a very compelling reason indeed.

Do products with a HEPA filter like the Dyson Pure Cool block the coronavirus? The answer is complicated.

As it circulates air, the Dyson Pure Cool’s HEPA filter captures 99.97% of allergens, bacteria, pollutants, dust, spores, molds and fungus. HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air, and Dyson meets those standards to catch any particulate as small as 0.3 microns. With the filter running in tandem with the fan function on an average setting, the Dyson Pure Cool will push 77 gallons per second of quiet, powerful and filtered air. For reference, and because we know what you’re thinking, the coronavirus is 0.125 microns in size.

However, we couldn’t find any studies that examine this particular question. In theory, HEPA filters should block the coronavirus, which is most easily transferred through droplets in the air. However, while it’s a powerful filter, the Dyson Pure Cool doesn’t filter out 100% of particles in the air, nor is there a guarantee it will filter 100% of the air inside your home. That being said, it’s still a powerful air purifier that’s certified as both asthma- and allergy-friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

So if you’re looking for an extra line of defense against the coronavirus, there’s a good chance that products like the Dyson Pure Cool could have some positive effects on your indoor air quality.

What We Didn’t Like About the Dyson Pure Cool:

It’s pricy, but most Dyson products tend to be, as the company likes to build and sell at the upper end of the market. The Pure Cool runs in the neighborhood of $400 or just a few ticks short, and that’s a lot to spend on a fan. It’s also a lot to spend on an air purifier. Still, when you consider you’re getting both in one here in a well-made unit, it takes some of the sting out of the ca-ching.

The Verdict: Is the Dyson Pure Cool Worth the Money?

Technological advanced, well-built and weirdly quiet, the Dyson Pure Cool will bring any room’s temperature down. Its ability to clean the air in that room to HEPA standards is an important bonus feature in the age of viral anxiety. All totaled, it’s worth the extra scratch to bring the Pure Cool home.

Dyson is a well-traveled and internationally known brand, so their products are always easy to locate and super reliable. The Pure Cool is sold on Amazon, and more advanced models are available via the company’s website.
