Every movie fan has their favorites, but when it comes to what the critics think, Rotten Tomatoes is the definitive source for what to watch. The ratings aggregator has rounded up all the scores from this summer’s slate of films, and announced the top ten, best-reviewed movies from the summer movie season. Did your favorite make the list of critical darlings?
10. It Comes At Night
Two families seek refuge in a house from a strange, apocalyptic disease that’s ravaged much of the outside world. They’re meant to keep each other safe, but suspicions end up being ignited and it’s every family — or is it every person? — for itself. Critics gave It Comes At Night an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, saying “what’s left unseen can be just as horrifying as anything on the screen.”
9. All Saints
Based on the true story of salesman-turned-pastor Michael Spurlock (John Corbett), the film follows Spurlock as he’s ordered to close down a tiny church, only to reconsider when a group of refugees from Burma arrive into town. With an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie’s themes of faith, race relations and brotherhood have never been more relevant.
8. A Ghost Story
Starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara, A Ghost Story is an arty, poetic take on what happens when one half of a couple passes away, only to see the other half move on. It sounds like a simple premise, but the movie takes its twists and turns liberally, transforming what starts as a love story into a quietly epic tale that spans centuries. Rotten Tomatoes has this at 91% fresh.

7. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Critics loved the Spider-Man reboot, giving it a 92% fresh rating and calling it a “a colorful, fun adventure that fits snugly in the sprawling MCU without getting bogged down in franchise-building.” They loved stars Tom Holland and Zendaya, as well, and the film debuted to a massive $120 million opening weekend, with global numbers now well over the $700 million mark.

6. Wonder Woman
What else can be said about Wonder Woman? The massively successful film blazed new trails for both female-led movies and female directors, and inspired a new generation of girls. With a 92% fresh rating, Rotten Tomatoes says “Thrilling, earnest, and buoyed by Gal Gadot’s charismatic performance, Wonder Woman succeeds in spectacular fashion.”
5. Logan Lucky
Though it didn’t exactly set the box office on fire, Steven Soderbergh’s heist comedy won over critics with a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The celeb-fueled flick starred Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Katie Holmes, Daniel Craig and Hillary Swank, among others, and reviewers labeled it as “high-octane fun.”
4. War For the Planet of the Apes
Just read what Rotten Tomatoes had to say: “War for the Planet of the Apes combines breathtaking special effects and a powerful, poignant narrative to conclude this rebooted trilogy on a powerful — and truly blockbuster — note.” Reviewers gave it a 93% rating amid praise for star Andy Serkis (who plays the leader of the apes). Now, it seems distributor 20th Century Fox is making a big Oscars push for the film, hoping to land a Best Picture nomination and a Best Actor nod for the incredible motion-capture work from Serkis.
3. Dunkirk
Christopher Nolan’s war drama got buzz for casting Harry Styles, but it was really an ensemble piece where every actor pulled his own weight. Based on the 1940 battle between Germany and Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk, the film received a 93% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with accolades for both Nolan and the “gifted ensemble cast.” A release date for the Blu-ray and digital version of Dunkirk has yet to be announced, so get the book for now, to read up on the incredibly harrowing true story behind the film.

2. Baby Driver
A fan favorite this summer, Baby Driver follows the exploits of a talented getaway driver named Baby (Ansel Elgort) whose life is colored by a gang of conniving characters and incidents, all set to a personal soundtrack in his head. Variety called it a “car chase movie set to rock and roll.” Critics gave it a 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, ranking it as runner-up for the best movie of summer 2017.

1. The Big Sick
The sleeper hit of the summer is also one of the best reviewed films of the year. Rotten Tomatoes ranked The Big Sick as number one on their list of summer flicks with a 98% approval rating. Based on the real-life courtship between Silicon Valley’s Kumail Nanjiani and writer/producer Emily V. Gordon, the film is a poignant yet honest look at interracial romances and cross-cultural family dynamics. From Rotten Tomatoes: “Funny, heartfelt, and intelligent, The Big Sick uses its appealing leads and cross-cultural themes to prove the standard romcom formula still has some fresh angles left to explore.” This small indie film is officially the best-reviewed movie of the summer.
