If you’re tired of listening to podcasts and iTunes on your morning commute, we’ve got good news for you. The new Hopper Go is a portable storage box from Dish that allows you to transfer your DVR and stream it to five devices simultaneously — all without a WiFi connection. For a one-time charge of $100, it’s definitely worth it.
I tried out my Hopper Go during my holiday travels to visit family in West Virginia. Southwest offers decent in-flight entertainment options, but I don’t like to be restricted. Before I even packed for the trip, I loaded up my Hopper Go with a few of my favorite throwback movies: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Mannequin, Clueless, plus some current shows like Modern Family and SVU just for good measure.
It was a little tricky figuring out how to connect the Hopper Go to my phone, but a quick Google search showed me how to do it in three steps. Once I had it set up, it was six hours of enjoyable travelling where I wasn’t locked into the short list of watching options afforded by the airline.
Thankfully I’m child-free, but I told my sister who has two girls and one more on the way about Hopper Go, and she thought it would be great for family road trips. They’ve always gotten by with portable DVD players (or her iPad, but that means always buying new DVDs or shows to watch. With a Hopper Go, she’d be able to constantly update what the kids watch in the car without buying new movies and shows on a disc, or using the data on her iPad. Seems like a win-win to us.
