Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales earned a jaw-dropping $326 million worldwide last weekend, proving the Johnny Depp-lead franchise still has legs. While Depp has dealt with his fair share of controversies off-screen this year, the success of the latest Pirates film proves we’re still suckers when it comes to seeing the Hollywood star in theaters.
In the newest Pirates sequel, Johnny Depp reprises his role as Jack Sparrow, who is hunted by Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) on his journey to find the Trident of Poseidon. Depp is joined by franchise newcomers Kaya Scodelario, who plays astronomer Carina Smyth Barbossa, and Brenton Thwaites in the role of sailor Henry Turner. Geoffrey Rush, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom co-star in the film, which was directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg.
The best way to see Dead Men Tell No Tales: in IMAX 3D in the comfort of your own reserved seats. Our tip: we avoid the crowded lineups and bypass the stress by buying tickets online through Fandango. Print the tickets out at home or get it sent to your phone, then walk straight to the ticket attendant and head to your seats. You’re guaranteed the seats you want, and can show up just before the movie without worrying about losing your spot.
Dead Men’s spectacular opening weekend pushed Disney past the $3 billion mark for the first half of 2017. Much of Disney’s success this year has come from the live action remake of Beauty and the Beast, which has so far grossed $1.2 billion in worldwide markets. Guardians of the Galaxy has brought in an additional $773.3 million for the studio.
