The Best Waterproof Socks for an Athletic Winter Season

What are waterproof socks and why do you need them? Well, those are fair questions but if you’re someone who has ever tried running in the rain or snow (or even after heavy rain or snow), the answers to those questions will seem pretty obvious. Waterproof socks help keep feet warm and comfortable during particularly soggy strolls. Whereas a regular pair of socks would absorb the water and therefore freeze your feet, waterproof socks will not. While they’re not really the most practical for fair-weather runs, they’re quite useful when things get soggy.

Waterproof socks are made up of three layers: a knit outter, a waterproof inner layer, and another knit layer to keep out the wet and the cold. These layers each have their own function: the outermost knit layer protects your foot from the abrasive shoe, the waterproof layer from the wet, and the inside knit layer nestles against your skin for a cozier feel.

What to Look For When Buying:

  • They should fit snugly to prevent chafing so don’t worry about a skin-tight feel.
  • Merino Wool or bamboo are comfortable inner layers against your feet and prevent chafing
  • A waterproof inner membrane
  • Breathable fabrics in the inner layer

There are plenty of waterproof socks to choose from to go with your best pair of running shoes, and we have them all right here.

3. Hanz All Season Mid Calf Sock

Hanz has a great waterproof sock as it’s constructed in three layers for durability and comfort. The outer layer is made from nylon, lycra, and spandex, which are dream components for a wet, outdoor adventure. The inner layer is Hanz Wicking Liner which is warm and transfers sweat away from the feet and out to the outer layer. The waterproof layer between is a Moisture Vapor Transfer which allows perspiration to escape but prevents water from coming in. With all three of these layers to protect you, you’re free to have a long hike or run in the rain.

4. Dexshell Ultralite Bamboo

These waterproof socks are the most environmentally-friendly to use because of the bamboo fibers in the inner layer. Instead of Merino wool, bamboo is used as a soft and protective inner layer against your skin. It’s less expensive and tougher than wool. Although the odor control is not on par with the Merino wool, the gains are there to be made for the environment. These socks are quite thin and therefore good for everyday use and other activities in wet weather.
