Dressing for the winter and summer can be straightforward if you live in an area that gets all four seasons. There are shorts and t-shirts, or heavy coats, boots, knit caps and gloves. But what about spring and fall? These seasons usually bring inconsistent daily temperatures, which means you need a jacket that is lightweight enough to keep you from sweating, but warm enough to keep shivers at bay. That’s why we love our lightweight down-filled jackets, which are the perfect coat for in-between seasons.
Whether you need something to keep you warm on the ski slopes, or while you’re running errands to the grocery store and mall, down jackets can provide warmth without bulk. The three jackets we’ve included on our list are ideal for temperatures between 30 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, with tough, nylon outer shells that are wind resistant and, in some cases, also water resistant.
Two of the jackets we’ve included on our list are also packable, with both the Tommy Hilfiger and Amazon Essentials jacket paired with a small nylon bag that can turn the jacket into a small pouch. We love the packable aspect for several scenarios. Not only does this make the coat easy to store between seasons, perfect for anyone low on storage space, it’s also an excellent option for travel. Whether you’re heading somewhere cool for vacation or setting off on a hike and want to attach the pouch to your backpack, having an extra layer that is small and lightweight can provide comfort and protection. We also like using the packable jackets in case of emergencies, perfect for keeping in your car in case of vehicle issues during cold weather.
Lightweight down jackets are also great for layering, especially in the case of the Spyder jacket, which is designed to be worn either on its own or under a heavier coat.
Versatile, warm, and comfortable, these three down jackets will keep you warm and stylish when the temperature starts to dip.
1. Tommy Hilfiger Men’s Packable Down Jacket
With a 100 percent nylon shell featuring the Tommy Hilfiger logo on the chest, the Men’s Packable Down Jacket will keep you warm and fashionable.
Pros: The Tommy Hilfiger features a 100 percent nylon shell, side entry hand pockets, and 650 fill down. The jacket can be packed into a small carrying case for easy carry and is machine washable. An internal drawstring enables the user to tighten the coat to help keep out cool air. Unlike the Spyder and Amazon Essentials, the Tommy Hilfiger is available in big and tall sizes up to 4X.
Cons: Unlike the Spyder, the Tommy Hilfiger doesn’t have zippered side pockets for keeping personal items safe. Some customers noticed feathers coming out of the jacket, which is a risk with any down coat. Unlike the Spyder and Amazon Essentials, the Tommy Hilfiger does not appear to be water resistant.
2. Spyder Pelmo Down Jacket
The official supplier to the US and Canadian Alpine Ski Teams, the Spyder Pelmo Down Jacket is lightweight and warm, with a water repellent finish that is still breathable enough to be worn around town or on the slopes.
Pros: The Spyder is heavy enough to be worn in cool weather and thin enough that it can be layered under a more substantial jacket in frigid temperatures. Water repellent and breathable, the jacket is 550 fill power down, has zippered pockets to keep items safe, and is designed for active and casual wear thanks to its high-tech fabric, including a microfiber lined neck and chin guard.
3. Amazon Essentials Men’s Packable Puffer Jacket
The Amazon Essentials Men’s Lightweight Water-Resistant Packable Puffer Jacket is a versatile cool weather jacket that includes small but essential features, including elastic cuffs to keep out cool air and a small travel bag for easy packing.
Pros: The Amazon Essentials is water resistant, machine washable, and lightweight, with added touches like a standup collar and elastic cuffs to keep out fresh air. The jacket includes convenient features like side zippered pockets and a nylon bag for easy packing.
Cons: Fits slightly on the larger size and when packed in the bag, it’s still quite large.
