Every man needs some of the best work pants if he wants to be ready for chores, projects or manual labor.

A great pair of work pants is tough and durable and made from high-quality fabrics. For serious work, you want these pants to be able to take a beating and handle dirt, cuts and regular washing. Given they’re used for work, many work pants also include extra and/or oversize pockets or loops to carry around any tools you might need.

But not everyone needs construction work-level protection; some of the best work pants offer durability and cargo room but with more flexible or relaxed materials.

So whether you’re gardening, working in a shed or heading to a construction site, you’ll be able to find some of the best work pants for you below. We stand by every pair below so they’re not in any particular order.

1. Dickies Men’s Tough Max Duck Carpenter Pant

There is no work site in America that doesn’t have a man wearing Dickies on it. Seriously, we’re not quite sure there’s a brand out there that has such a lock on its category like Dickies has with affordably priced workwear.

That’s why we recommend Dickies Men’s Tough Max Duck Carpenter Pant. It uses triple-needle stitching to add years on to the life of your pants and makes use of Dickies Tough Max flexible fabric, a blend of cotton, polyester and elastane, also known as Lycra.

The elastane adds crucial flexibility and stretching for those crouching moments without trading off on abrasion resistance or tear and tensile strength. That also makes them more comfortable and stylish and the modern fit looks good without being too slim or too roomy.

Lastly, you can count on the utility loop and large pockets to handle your tools or accessories and keep them readily accessible.

These Dickies won’t hold up in more extreme work environments, but overall they are all-around solid, durable work pants and definitely among the best work pants around.

2. Carhartt Men’s Relaxed Fit Twill Dungaree Pant

For a little more style and storage on the less heavy-duty side of work pants, you need to check out the Carhartt Men’s Relaxed Fit Twill Dungaree Pant.

These pants are 100% cotton ring-spun twill for added durability, with a relaxed seat and thigh and straight leg openings that are perfect to go over work boots.

Of course, they wouldn’t be that useful without reinforced back pockets, additional side pockets and a utility loop.

3. Carhartt Men’s Ripstop Cargo Work Pant

If you’re looking for Carhartt pants on the tougher side, the Carhartt Men’s Ripstop Cargo Work Pant will be up your alley.

The devil is in the details and Carhartt paid attention with these pants. They started with a 9.25-ounce cotton ripstop fabric so rips and tears will be much harder to come by.

But Carhartt doubled down on the quality and storage too, with double-front construction, Cordura-lined back and front-ledge pockets, two large cargo pockets, a utility loop and additional utility pockets. Lastly, Carhartt added a gusseted crotch for added comfort.

Whatever you get up to, you can count on these pants. They’re one of our favorites and some of the best work pants around.

4. Duluth Men’s TradeTek Cargo Pants

Duluth Trading Co. is one of the best brands making work gear that we suspect you haven’t heard of. The Duluth Men’s TradeTek Cargo Pants are some of the best work pants around for their durability and modern flourishes.

The relaxed-fit pants are constructed from an 8-ounce DuluthFlex Fire Hose fabric, which consists of 97% cotton and 3% spandex for as much flexibility as durability. Plus, the pants feature what Duluth calls FendOff Finish, which repels water and stains.

Duluth went ahead and triple-stitched the fabric and used nylon to reinforce the knees, cuffs and other high-wear areas.

That covers the durability aspects, but Duluth added a hidden crouch gusset for extra comfort when you’re crouching or stretching your pants out.

But of course, these pants couldn’t be useful without a boatload of pockets, 14 to be exact, including a five-in-one cargo pocket and mid-leg carpenter pockets as well as a hammer loop.

5. CQR Men’s Tactical Pants

For some more multipurpose pants, the CQR Men’s Tactical Pants offers everything you’d want in great work pants.

Made from 65% polyester and 35% cotton, these ripstop pants feature eight cargo pockets. The fabric, which CQR calls Duratex, also repels liquid, dirt and any other crud you might get on your pants during a job.

It sounds simple, but work pants don’t need to be complicated to get the job done. Whether you’re in the workshop or out for a hike, these CQR pants will take care of you.

6. Wrangler Riggs Workwear Men’s Ranger Pant

For some heavy-duty thick pants, you can’t do much better than something from Wrangler.

The Wrangler Riggs Workwear Men’s Ranger Pant will keep your comfortable and protected while you go about your work. With a 10-ounce cotton ripstop fabric, these relaxed-fit pants will fall apart before the rips, tears and abrasions take them down.

Wrangler also reinforced the knees and seams and lined the back pockets with Cordura for added durability.

But despite the thickness of the pants, Wrangler made the pants to move and keep you comfortable, adding in an action gusset crotch so you keep your most important parts pinch-free and breathing.

And of course, you’ve got more loops and pockets than you’ll probably ever fill with tools for most jobs.

7. Caterpillar Men’s H2O Defender Pant

Caterpillar is the world’s largest construction equipment manufacturer, so it should come as no surprise that the company makes the best work pants too.

The Caterpillar Men’s H2O Defender Pant has everything you might want in a great pair of work pants.

The relaxed-fit pants are made of a cotton, polyester, elastane blend for comfort and durability. But what also makes these great is their water resistance. They won’t handle a deluge, but they’ll handle back spray, drizzles and light rain while keeping you dry.

But that’s not all. A handful of details make these pants even more useful. For starters, it’s got more pockets and loops than you’ll know what to do with and there are detachable pouches too. Beyond those, the pants also feature reflective piping on the front and back knees so you’ll always have some light reflection to stay visible.

But perhaps the most useful features occur on the knees. The knees feature an extra nylon layer and there are actually pockets in the knees for knee pads if you expect to be kneeling a lot that day.

Overall, every element adds up to a great pair of pants, and one carpenter said in a review that he loved them and anyone in building trades can’t go wrong with them.

8. Alaskan Hardgear Hammer-Forged Flex Pants

We only recently discovered Alaskan Hardgear and, true to its name, the company makes seriously rugged workwear.

The Alaskan Hardgear Hammer-Forged Flex Pants in a relaxed fit use among the heftiest fabrics we found in work pants, with 10.7-ounce cotton twill for superior abrasion resistance and long-term durability. But the brand didn’t forget about comfort either and incorporated 3% spandex into the fabric and added a gusset designed for crouching.

In terms of utility, front zipper pockets, as well as back and cargo pockets with flaps, give you a decent amount of room for your tools. A durable water repellent coating also keeps you dry from spills and light rain, so a bit of water won’t stop you from getting the job done.

Overall, the Alaskan Hardgear work pants offer a great balance between rugged durability and modern comfort and they’re among the best work pants for all but the most extreme work environments.
