Burberry is best known for its iconic trench coats and bold checkered patterns, and this Exploded Check Short-Sleeve Shirt in ink — which we think is code for indigo — brings the iconic label thoroughly into the now.
The British label was founded by 21-year-old Thomas Burberry in 1856. At the time, Burberry specialized in outerwear and then in 1879 introduced gabardine, “a hardwearing, water-resistant yet breathable fabric, in which the yarn is waterproofed before weaving” to its trench coats. Since then, the brand has turned fashion house and kept its check-pattern in, well, check. Because the check had been so widely copied, the company scaled back the use of it in all but 10% of its products in 2006.
Which brings us to this fresh take on the signature pattern. With an oversized or “exploded” version of the traditional check pattern, it is made distinctly Burberry. The cotton, short-sleeve, button up features an indigo hued colorway, spread collar, curved hem, side gussets and chest pocket.
For those holding out hope that Burberry may one day introduce a checkered trench in this shade, it’s worth remembering that it took Burberry over 100 years before introducing trench coats in colors other than khaki and black.
