* French actress and muse stars in YSL’s campaign teaser
* The new campaign will be the second under the guidance of Anthony Vaccarello
* Gainsbourg’s family has a long history of partnering with the label
Yves Saint Laurent’s creative director Anthony Vaccarello debuted a short film entitled “#YSL09” on Wednesday, offering a glimpse at his sophomore campaign under the French house, reports Dazed. The short “teaser” film stars French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, who slowly walks through a dimly lit abandoned warehouse wearing a glittery mini dress and carrying a very over-sized clutch — which she appears to regard as some sort of weapon, judging by the her combative, swinging motions.
The short film was directed by Nathalie Canguilhem, who has collaborated with Vaccarello several times in the past for both print and film ads. The fashion film director, who is known for her stark-meets-street aesthetic, also revealed three consecutive posts featuring images of Gainsbourg on her Instagram. The posts indicate that Gainsbourg may also be the face of the YSL’s upcoming print campaign, marking her continued partnership with the brand as a whole.
Gainsbourg sat front row at the designer’s post-Hedi Slimane debut collection, alongside her half-sister Lou Dillon and mother Jane Birkin. Gainsbourg’s family also has other ties to the Yves Saint Laurent label that date back to the pre-Vaccarello-era. Birkin has also been associated with the label, starring the YSL Le Smoking campaign under Hedi Slimane in 2016. The glittery, 80s-inspired mini dress that Gainsbourg wears in the teaser, however, is from A/W 2017 , so there are no reveals with respect to the actual sartorial aspect of the upcoming collection.
The video presumably debuted in accordance to opening night of the Cannes Film Festival, where Gainsbourg is promoting her film, Ismael’s Ghosts.
