We’ve just discovered a company that produces affordable sunglasses that can be used for any occasion, without worrying about breaks or scuffs. Meet Knockaround – the makers of reliable shades your eyes and wallet will love.
Knockaround was founded by friends in the sunny, SoCal city of San Diego and has since grown to produce thousands of sunglasses, featured in well-known media outlets such as GQ and Hypebeast, and on the faces of everyone from surfers to bankers.
According to founder Adam Moyer, the idea behind the name was inspired by a pair of “knockaround” sneakers his dad had in the garage. “You could count on them, they were dependable, and you didn’t care if they got beaten up,” Moyer explains.
He applied that same idea to sunglasses. “I wanted them to be affordable, if you lost them or broke them, no big deal. The Knockaround name seemed like a natural fit—like, I’m just going to knock around this pair of sunglasses.”
The brand’s success is due in part to their stylish, wearable designs, and their low prices. We’ve spotted frames as low as $7 for regular sunglasses to $30 for custom-built sunglasses, where you can choose everything from the shade of your lenses to the color of the temples. With literally hundreds of thousands of possible customizations, Knockaround offers an astonishing selection for the everyday sunglass enthusiast.
Considering that I use sunglasses daily for driving, walking to work, and whenever I’m outside, I thought it would be a great idea if I reviewed a pair from Knockaround to find out for myself if they are truly worth the buck.
Read below to find out why I now routinely carry a pair of Knockarounds with me every day.
As mentioned, Knockaround offers a considerable variety of sunglasses which, if you’re like me, and struggle to find a well-designed pair of shades you feel comfortable in, makes it easy to find something to fit your style and personality.
Because Knockaround offers various shapes, colors, and sizes of sunglasses, choosing the right pair for me was easy. After searching for a pair of shades that I could wear to the beach — looking through the brand’s classic, aviator, and square-shaped sunglasses — I settled on a sleek pair of their “Glossy Tortoise Shell Amber Fort Knocks.”
Inspired by the United States Bullion Depository in Fort Knox, KY, the injection-molded frames feature recessed gold bar and gold Knockaround logo detailing with hidden spring hinges. The form-fitting sunglasses make for a comfortable and durable fit.
I liked the sheen on the plastic frames, and the gold contrast detailing. The tonal lenses look great with the tortoiseshell too, and they offer UV400 protection — great for the amount of sunlight we get here in Los Angeles. Notice how the temples are a little thicker than regular pairs of sunglasses? Those little details make a big difference.
I was impressed that for only $20 I could own a solid pair of stylish and versatile sunglasses that looked way more expensive. The fact that I was supporting a local, independent company felt good too. In addition, the glasses came with a sunglass pouch and a 30-day warranty.
I’ve been able to wear these frames with board shorts to the beach just as easily as wearing them with a polo shirt and slacks to work. I’ve gotten a ton of compliments on them too. And, because they’re so inexpensive, it won’t break the bank to get another pair for myself — and as gifts for my friends and family, too.
