* A more versatile alternative to the oxford shoe
* Design dates back to the 1800s
* Made from calfskin
If it looks like an oxford, then it must be an oxford, right? Except when it’s not. Such is the situation with these Burnished Toe Lace Up Derbies from Hugo Boss.
But what is a derby? At a bare minimum, the derby is a shoe or boot that’s made from four pieces, with shoelace eyelets that are sewn directly to the upper rather than being part of the upper itself. Whereas on an oxford, the eyelets are part of the upper. Derbies are also much easier to slip on and off when compared to an oxford.
And depending on where you’re from, you might also call them something entirely different, like a gibson, blucher or even bucks. Historically, the derby was a popular sporting and hunting boot in the mid-1800s that was eventually accepted as a shoe fit enough for the city.

So now that you know a bit about the derby, let’s take a look at these rust copper colored ones from Hugo Boss. Made from calfskin with a rubber sole and stacked heel, there’s a slight brown to black ombré shift at the toe and heel. Fit-wise, these are going to run a little long given the overall shape, so you might want to go a half size down when ordering. All of this is topped off with a Hugo Boss embossment at the heel.
Pair these like you would with a great pair of sneakers, dressing up your denim or casual trousers. Or, pair these with fancy slacks and a suit for the office. You’ll look great either way.
