Designer Eileen Fisher debuted her eponymous collection back in 1984, and soon became know for her clean lines, simple shapes and stylish take on functional clothes. More than thirty years later, the brand still is going strong by keeping to those same qualities, and upping their game while they’re at it.

These days, Eileen Fisher has given us even more to love as they’ve quietly made a commitment to transparency and sustainability, pledging to only use organic cotton and linen by the year 2020. They’ve made a start by sourcing 25% of their linen from an organic farm in Normandy, where some of the best linen is grown. There, the flax plants used to create this fabric are grown without the use of herbicides, pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.

If all this sound a bit well, crunchy, take a look at the simple grey shift dress here, hardly a shapeless sack suitable only for life off the grid. An easy but slim cut means this dress is a no-brainer any day of the week, while the sleeveless style begs to be worn year-round. Wear it alone with a big necklace and sandals in the summer, and over a turtleneck and tights in the winter. That lovingly-grown organic linen just gets better with time, too, giving it a softer hand and a broken-in feel like your favorite tee-shirt.

While Eileen Fisher didn’t set out to be a sustainable designer way back in the 80s, she probably, and inadvertently, kept some landfills lighter by virtue of her timeless designs. A wardrobe workhorse like this organic linen dress certainly won’t find its way to a discard pile any time soon, and with the added plus of its mindfully-sourced origins, looking good and doing good just got a lot easier.
