If you’re heading out on the road this summer, you’re going to want to pack the right gear for your trip. Take it from Alex Pendleton, a professional surfer and the main team rider for Cali surf brand, VAST Life.

Born and raised in Waikiki, HI, the 22-year-old literally grew up between the beaches and the city, and has been road-tripping up and down the island — and across America — since he was a kid. This past month, he just finished an epic road trip with VAST Life, up the California coast, in search of good waves and good vibes.

Riding on the back of custom Harley Davidson Sportsters and a custom VW Syncro van, the VAST Life team made their way through seven cities in ten days, to raise awareness for Schooner’s Landing and the Albion River community located near the Mendocino Coast. (The once thriving town and recreational area has been damaged in recent years by flash floods, fires and mudslides).

Whether you’re cruising up the coast with your surfboard and custom vehicle, or just heading out for a weekend with friends, here’s what Pendleton says you need to pack for a successful summer road trip. See how he laid it all out above, then follow the links below to shop his favorite items.

1. VAST Life Pillow Jacket

When the storm charts light up, and you are on the road, you’ll need a warm yet packable jacket. This pillow jacket features an inflatable pillow-hood to keep your covered and cozy while chasing that swell up the coastline. It’s lightweight yet water-resistant to keep you dry, without adding a lot of bulk to your backpack or duffel bag.

2. GoPro HERO5 Action Camera

One of the best-selling action cameras out there, the GoPro HERO5 Black features 4K video, voice control, an easy-to-use touch display and a rugged, waterproof design. Shoot stories on your bike, on your board or anywhere else really, then automatically send your footage to your phone or upload to the cloud. The camera’s got a great image stabilization feature, whether it’s handheld or mounted to your gear, and it’s durable design means it’ll withstand any sudden drops or inclement weather too.

3. Shiseido Clear Stick UV Protector Broad Spectrum SPF

Since he’s usually outdoors all day, Pendleton always carries around sunscreen. This one from Shiseido won’t clog pores and is effective all day, even in the water. Best of all, this one comes in a pocket-sized “stick” that’s easy to rub over your face (similar to a deodorant stick) without having to get your fingers messy.

4. Ultimate Ears BOOM 2 Wireless Speaker

During their recent road trip, the VAST Life team stopped in different cities each night to camp out and meet fans and followers of the brand. Pendleton says a key to a good campfire party is a solid Bluetooth speaker. This one’s got insanely good, loud 360 degree sound with deep bass and its portable design means you can bring the music anywhere. The BOOM 2 Phantom is also built for adventure – it’s got a battery life of 15 hours, it’s shockproof, and it’s waterproof up to 30 minutes and a depth of one meter.

5. Samsung T3 Portable SSD 500GB Hard Drive

You’re going to capture a ton of memories on your road trip, so you’ll need somewhere secure to store them. This Samsung Portable SSD T3 hard drive offers a storage capacity of up to 500GB in a palm-sized design, that weighs less than two ounces. This powerful drive offers blazing-fast transfer speeds of up to 450 MB/s and its shock-resistant metal case and internal frame means your chances of losing your data are slim to none.

6. Nature’s Bounty Fish Oil

Pendleton is serious when it comes to taking his vitamins. He packs his bag with a bottle of Nature’s Bounty Fish Oil, which contains EPA and DHA — two omega-3 fatty acids that help support and maintain the health of your cardiovascular system. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered good fats important for cellular, heart, and metabolic health and help maintain triglyceride levels in your body.

7. Nature Made Vitamin C Tablets

Another must-have in Pendleton’s bag: Vitamin C tablets, to help ward off colds after getting out of the water. Vitamin C also plays an integral part in the synthesis of collagen, which helps support healthy skin. These ones feature no artificial flavors, no color added, no preservatives and are gluten-free.

8. Youtheory Turmeric Extra Strength Formula Capsules

Turmeric has been known to reduce joint-pain, while also helping people who deal with headaches and allergies. Because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric can also contribute to a healthier digestive system.

9. Gelindo Tactical Backpack

Pendleton’s been carrying around his In4Mation bag for years, and it’s now sold-out online. We found a similar version from Gelindo. This well-reviewed backpack is durable and comfortable to use thanks to its double-stitching, high density fabric material, heavy duty zippers and the ventilated mesh padding in the back area and shoulder straps. The bag features a ton of pockets for your stuff, two separate large compartments, and even a waterproof hydration compartment that keeps your liquid cool or hot for up to four hours.

10. Bandai – Chibi Tamagotchi

So this one’s a little random, but when you’re on the road a lot, you’ll need something to relieve your boredom. Pendleton carries around Tamagotchi – remember these? This “digital pet” is smaller than the classic version made popular in the 90s, and you can turn the sound off or on for discreet storage in your pocket or bag. “Feed” and care for it every few hours to keep your “pet” alive, then tuck it away for when you’re, y’know, actually doing something on your trip.
