Forget What You Saw in “Home Alone,” Here’s Why You Should Be Using Aftershave

Aftershave isn’t the staple it once was in men’s bathrooms and frankly, we blame Kevin McAllister. The famous face-grabbing scene from Home Alone gave Aftershave a bad rap, but where 8-year-old Macaulay Culkin went wrong was his application. When used correctly, aftershave is a great way to treat skin that has been cut during shaving, or anytime you want your face to smell good. And who doesn’t want that?

When it comes to aftershave, it’s all about the process. After shaving, splash cold water on your face to help close your pores. Lightly towel dry your face and add your daily moisturizer, which will not only hydrate your skin, but act as a primer for your aftershave, helping it stay on all day.

Once your face is ready, pour two to three small drops of aftershave into one hand and then rub both hands together. Give your hands a few seconds to “breathe,” which allows some of the alcohol in aftershave to evaporate, which will help avoid drying out your skin. Then massage your cheeks, chin and neck, evenly distributing the aftershave. No need to slap it on like you see in the movies. A couple light pats and massaging it in a circular motion will do the trick.

Now that you know how to apply aftershave, it’s time to pick out a scent and product that is right for you. Here’s what to get.
