Whether you’re a balayaged blonde, a firey redhead, or a brunette simply trying to cover up greys, we all know that caring for color-treated hair can be a pain. Damage and breakage aside (hello bleach), you also have to worry about your tone changing, general fading, and the dreaded root grow-out in between visits to the salon.

Fortunately, there are a number of helpful hacks and products that stylists swear by to help extend the life of your color and keep your locks healthy.

We sat down with Anna Manessiotis of the upscale Beverly Hills salon, BOMANE to find out her secret tips for maintaining your color in between touch ups. Known for her expertise in beachy blonde color, Mannessiotis has worked on set with Eva Longoria, model Gina Vaia, and the author and social media influencer Kelly Oxford. Read on for her tips on how to prolong your color like a pro.

1. Cleansing

If you have dyed blonde hair or highlights, you’ve probably heard of a miraculous product called purple shampoo. Purple and silver shampoos help maintain your color’s tone by cancelling out yellow and brassy hues. But what you may not know is that there are color-enhancing shampoos for brunettes and redheads too. Manessiotis’s top pick? The Alchemic System from Davines. “They have shampoo for every hair color so you can keep it fresh at home. They have SILVER for blondes and highlighted brunettes. GOLDEN for brunettes to keep their shine and blondes to keep them warm and golden. RED to keep your red heads and coppers vibrant. TOBACCO enriches dark to light brunettes.”

2. After Wash Care

Because color-enhancing shampoos can be a bit drying, it’s important to replenish moisture to your mane with a conditioner or oil after washing your hair. Manessiotis recommends either Davines OI All In One Milk or their OI Oil. “These are great to keep the hair moisturized and protect your hair from UV rays when outside.”

3. Styling

As you know, using heat styling tools and blow dryers can damage your hair, especially when it’s color-treated. Manessiotis recommends to always use a heat protection product like a thermal spay prior to using a heat tool to prevent breakage. “Thermal spray blocks the heat and keeps the heat from fading out hair color and over drying hair,” she says. Her favorite? “SHOW thermal spray is great to put on the hair before heat styling.”

4. Maintenance

If you have breakage, dryness, or split ends, take extra care to repair your locks with a treatment product. We all know that it doesn’t matter how amazing your color looks if you’re hair is too dry and damaged to even wear down. This is especially important for those who spend a lot of time outdoors, Manessiotis says. “If you’re going to be outside a lot or be in the water, it’s always smart to protect your hair with [a hair treatment like] Olaplex.”  If you’re in a bind or prefer an all-natural option, she says coconut oil will work too.

5. Prevention

The products you use are an important part of maintaining your color, but Manessiotis says there’s another important step to preventing color fading and damage. “My favorite tip is that everyone should have a water filter in their shower so the hair doesn’t get minerals built up in the hair. Minerals dull out color and make hair feel dry.”
