* Katie Maloney-Schwartz is a cast member on Bravo’s Vanderpump Rules
* Just launched lipstick collaboration for her blog, Pucker & Pout
* Find out inspiration behind the collab and her other beauty faves
Katie Maloney-Schwartz is like that one girlfriend you have so much in common with within minutes of meeting her. One of the stars of Bravo’s hit reality series,
The reality star admits she’s actually super low-maintenance when it comes to beauty, which is what inspired her to recently create a new lipstick line with celebrity makeup artist Julie Hewett for her thriving online destination Pucker & Pout.
Pucker & Pout, and her lipstick line, she says, caters to that everyday girl that can relate to her. And even if you’re not an “everyday girl,” there’s something for you too, Case in point: Maloney-Schwartz says her more done-up castmates, like Stassi Schroeder and Kristen Doute, already have their favorites from the line too.
We chatted with Maloney-Schwartz about her new lipstick collaboration, her celeb beauty icons and her go-to products for an easy skincare and beauty regime. Plus, she didn’t hold back when it came to talk about her cast mates on the show and what they have been up to.
You recently launched the lipstick line collaboration with Julie Hewitt. How did that come about?
Well when we started Pucker & Pout, we always wanted it to become more than a blog. We wanted it to become a brand and wanted it to grow. You know, like have its own personality. We felt like it was the right time (to relaunch it) and we decided to go with lipsticks and it was important to collaborate with someone who has an established brand and reputation because it is a lot of work. We wanted to first do a test run and the response was more amazing than we could’ve imagined.
The episode where you opened up about your depression was really emotional and exciting all at the same time because you were also relaunching Pucker & Pout. What were your feelings while watching it?
It (the episode) got me. It was hard for me to watch it because I went through it and went through it for a really long time. I was happy to share it with people. It’s not something I’ve been sharing with people for a long time. To share with people who have been watching the show, it feels like they’re my friends. I think it was the right time to share it with people. It’s not even something I talk much about with Tom about, but I’m happy to share it.
Some of the cast members of Vanderpump Rules have launched their own line including, Lala Kent who has her own lip gloss line. Have there been any comments or backlash comparing the two of you?
I don’t want to be in competition with anyone on the show and you know with makeup, it’s so broad. I was not aware of her starting her line until it launched.
Has she been supportive?
Oh yeah she definitely has. Like the other night, we had the girls over at Stassi’s to celebrate the launch [of my lipstick line] and Lala came over and it was really exciting for me so that’s all that matters.
Were you all watching a Vanderpump episode during your girls night?
(Laughs) We had it on in the background but we were just having drinks and eating.
What did you have in mind for Pucker and Pout when you were re-launching it?
I think so many people I talk to are like, “I’m just not good at makeup” or “I don’t know how to do my liner,” and I didn’t know what to do either. I would go on YouTube and I would sit by my sink and a mirror and practice doing my eyeshadow and eye liner. I wanted it (Pucker and Pout) to be something that would make beauty and makeup approachable to everyone and to the everyday girl.
You know you don’t have to be professional or perfect but it’s just about practicing. Also, tips on how to elevate a look. Like how to put a makeup look together. There’s something for everyone on there, even guys. There’s a lot of skincare stuff and DIY masks. That was the main goal — to have it be totally inclusive and have something on there for everyone.
Did Tom [Schwartz, Katie’s husband] help you with the guy aspect of the site?
He has contributed some things. He loves to steal all my masks and he benefits from me having all these products laying around.
That sounds a lot like Tom Sandoval.
Yeah you know Tom Sandoval is more like seasoned where Tom (Schwartz) will dabble.
What’s the best beauty advice you’ve ever received?
From the time I was really young, like 12 years old, my mom would teach me how to moisturize. I’m really thankful, because my skin looks good now. I don’t have any wrinkles. When I was in my 20s and moved out, I would be with my girlfriends and found out how many of them didn’t moisturize and learn that’s not a thing people do and I was amazed by that.
Cleaning your brushes is also really important because there’s so much bacteria. But also, they don’t apply really well because there’s so much junk in there and you’ll have breakouts and a lot of skin problems.
How do you wash your brushes?
I like using this Sephora aerosol. After using a brush, I’ll spray it with that and gently wipe it with a paper towel. But about once a month usually, I’ll really get in there with a brush cleaner and that keeps them clean and working nice.
What are your go-to skin care products?
I like to mix it up. I’ve always liked to use Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Cleanser — that’s my favorite. I also like silk skin moisturizers. I like to use toner and exfoliate once a week with a coffee scrub (Frank’s). Their body one with the shimmer in it leaves your skin so soft and sparkled.

Do you have any drug-store favorites?
Yeah I have the

I know you were recently in Coachella. What are some essentials you take with you when traveling during the summer?
I like the
Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid Sunscreen for Acne-Prone Skin, Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion with Helioplex, Oxybenzone-Free, Oil-Free, Fragrance-Free; Non-Comedogenic, 3 fl. oz
Who are your celebrity beauty inspos?
I’ve looked up to Gwen Stefani and Cindy Crawford forever. I am obsessed with Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty products. Her stuff is great. Some people want to think like, ‘Oh it’s just a celebrity line, that’s why everyone’s buying it,’ but it’s actually really good. I use the foundation and her lip gloss is awesome.
What about Kylie Jenner’s makeup line?
Yeah I’ve tried it. It’s good but I’m not a fan of liquid lipsticks. I like actual lipsticks.
What’s your favorite color from your line?
Omigosh, I can’t choose. I switch every day. The Pucker has such a great shade of pink. It almost glows. Pump and Pout are so great and soft for every day if you don’t want to feel like you’re wearing lipstick. They’re all so great.
What kind of girl would wear these lipsticks?
Considering I’m a girl who loves makeup, I’m really low-maintenance. When I go out, I don’t want to fuss about what I’m wearing or what I got going on, so they (lipsticks) are long-wear but they’re not matte long-wear. They are a cream long-wear. They really do last. If you kiss someone on the cheek, it will transfer BUT it’s so pigmented that it will stick to your lips real nicely. So I don’t have to worry about going to a party and worrying, ‘Omigosh, is my lip gone?’ That’s what I like. Because if I’m going to be wearing lipstick, I want it to stay all night, not keep checking it. So you know, it’s for the low-maintenance glamazon.
Does Tom like make-up or no make-up for you?
He does [like make-up]. He says his favorite look on me is when I tie my hair in a ponytail and wear a lot of eye liner. He likes a lot of eye liner.
What’s the best way to take care of your skin after wearing make-up?
Wash it all off. Also, sleep masks are a new thing. Sometimes your face takes a beating with all that makeup and when you’re washing it and scrubbing it, so a brightening or hydrating mask is good. I like to keep one by my bed so I don’t have to think about it and I just put it on and wake up thinking, ‘Oh thank god I did that cause my skin is not dry and it feels nice and soft.’
Do the girls from the show have favorites from your lipstick line?
Yeah Kristen’s favorite is Pout and Stassi likes Pump. They have their favorites but they want to get into them all.
This season of Vanderpump just ended and I feel like everyone has changed in some way. Who do you think has transitioned the most and who do you think needs to catch up?
It is a long season but it’s because there is so much going on and it’s exciting to watch. I think we have all, at different paces, grown up and matured and are going through new chapters in life. I don’t want to call out anyone or say something negative (laughs) but I mean, Jax is always a few steps behind. I mean there’s some other people who maybe have lost sight or touch.
This season, Jax actually admitted he needed a change.
Well we all agree he needs a change but it’s more like, we’ll believe it when we see it (laughs). But he has been through a lot the past few months. His dad past away. But hopefully he continues to stick to the path he’s on right now because as of now it’s good.
Also this season, you opened up about your post-traumatic stress disorder after your accident and all your castmates expressed sympathy, including Scheana, who you’ve had a rocky relationship with. How’s your friendship now?
It’s hard with Scheana. Maybe we’re not meant to be friends, but we can still get along and hang out. I don’t think she grasps that or was on board with that. You know, when I went through this change, I was going through a lot of introspection and wanted to work on myself over the course of months. For her to come out and call me fake and that I’ve always been a b*tch, that hurt my feelings because she was one of my closest friends and bridesmaids in my wedding, so I feel like she took a dump on all of that.
Everyone does seem to be cordial with each other, though, this season. But it seems like you, Stassi and Kristen are back to being that group of best friends like in the beginning of the show.
Yeah me, Stassi, and Kristen went our separate ways but now we have come back to each other and appreciate the friendship we have with each other and respect one another. We have that sister bond. It took us quite a while to get there but I’m happy where we are.
It’s pretty safe to say you and Tom have had the most successful relationship on the show. What relationship advice do you have for couples to make through all the ups and downs?
Well we had to learn how to really communicate. We were horrible at it. But also the commitment we have to each other. People also just need to be honest with themselves and with that person. I think it’s just that you’re committed to each other and both really have to want it.
You both are so busy, too. You with your lipstick line and Tom with the bar, Tom Tom. How is that going?
You know I don’t know when it’s officially opening but it’s coming along. We’re growing up.
Why do you think Vanderpump Rules has been so popular with the fans?
I mean we are always asking ourselves the same question. I think people can relate to us. Even though we’re crazy and extreme, I think people see themselves and their friendships in us. I hear that a lot from people like, ‘Oh this reminds me of me and my friend and what you guys would do.’ So I think it’s the relatability and of course, the crazy antics.
Being on reality TV, do you feel the pressure to put your whole life on display like on social media, or are you the type to put your phone away and enjoy the party?
I’m the worst at posting. People are always like, ‘You never post’ or ‘Why don’t you use Instagram stories?’ and I’m like, ‘Cause I’m living my life. I’m not like, ‘Hold on, I better document this.’
I mean I like to look into peoples’ lives; it’s really fun and sometimes creepy almost, so we all like that. But sometimes, I’m like, I’m not doing anything interesting. I’m just more quality over quantity. I guess I could be more active, but I just like being present. But that’s why I have Kristen. Kristen’s always good at taking pictures. She always has a bunch of pictures from the night. I have like one picture and it’s blurry and she has a whole album to choose from.
Everyone’s tries to put their phones away and live in the moment but it’s easier said than done.
Yeah I mean I’m still on it (phone) like on Reddit or looking at memes. Tom and I will sometimes leave our phones in the car when we go out to dinner. It’s just too easy to get distracted. I miss not having a phone because back then, people would call your house and leave a message if they couldn’t reach you and now it’s like, ‘Why didn’t you text me back?’
One last thing: as a fan of the show, I’ve always wondered if you actually work at SUR?
Yeah I’ve never worked there full time. But I do work there. I always joke I’m going to have my ashes spread there (laughs). It’s a good family, it’s nice there. I love being in there even if I’m not working. I love having dinner there — the food is so good.
