Spy Finds is a weekly series that unveils the coolest, under-the-radar products that you haven’t heard of until now. Each product is curated by our editors who want to help you discover cool finds you didn’t know you needed.
Finding the right skincare routine can take years, and pinpointing the exact products that give your skin the nutrient-dense formula it needs to regenerate, stay moisturized and protect itself involves a lot of trial and error. Trying out a new brand is always a little nerve-wracking since you never know whether you’re going to love it, in the best-case scenario, or, in the worst-case scenario, break out in a horrible rash. Thankfully, with all of Caldera + Lab’s skincare products, I’ve avoided the former and experienced the latter.
Caldera + Lab is a new grooming company that’s quickly become one of our favorite men’s skincare brands. I’ve now reviewed Caldera + Lab’s The Good Multifunctional Serum, The Clean Slate Cleanser and The Base Layer moisturizer, all of which are frontrunners for the best men’s skincare products of the year. All of these products are rock solid and contain high-quality ingredients, and I’ve recommended all of them to friends. (The brand’s cult-favorite face serum completely revitalized my dad’s skincare routine.) However, I now have a new favorite from this brand.
I can confidently say that the new Caldera + Lab reviving face mask, The Deep, will be a staple in my regular skincare routine for years to come.
The Deep is made up of five different types of clay and is formulated to detoxify and purify pores. It contains ingredients for deep exfoliation as well as balancing the skin’s natural oils so there’s not too much or too little moisture. It’s made to give you an overall brighter complexion and can be used 1-2 times every week.
Like Caldera + Lab’s other products, The Deep contains natural, skin-nourishing ingredients that are ethically sourced. The company only uses sustainable ingredients and packaging and likes to think of their products as “beyond organic”. The Deep is 100% vegan and free of phthalates and parabens. So what is in it?
The Deep contains ingredients such as:
- Sea Silt Extract
- Kaolin Clay
- Charcoal Powder
- Moroccan Lava Clay
- Volcanic Ash
- Plankton Extract
- Essential Oils
According to the Caldera + Lab website, “We teamed up with world-renowned scientists to create a completely non-toxic product that’s proven to give you your best skin ever. Based on extensive research and clinical trials, we set out to surpass conventional methods and create a product clinically proven to deliver incredible results.”
The Deep Face Mask: What I Liked
The Deep comes in a metal tube and the formula itself is incredibly smooth. It goes on very easily, and a little of it can go a long way, a quality I really appreciate in my skincare products. It has the texture and look of very soft mud, and it doesn’t contain any harsh physical exfoliants or scrubbing agents that can irritate the skin.
It dries relatively quickly when it’s on your face, and hardens into that familiar face mask texture where it’s slightly harder to create distinct facial expressions. It rinses off easily, and my skin always feels purified after using it.
The Deep Face Mask: What I Didn’t Love
The Deep face mask does dry out my skin, so I always follow it up with a moisturizer. This isn’t exactly a knock against the brand, since many moisturizers do that, but is worth noting if you already have very dry skin.
The price of this face mask, similar to other Caldera + Lab products, is also more expensive than other choices. If you’re going for a luxe pick with super high-quality ingredients, it’s a great option. However, I wouldn’t say anyone needs this particular mask, or must choose this over more affordable options. They achieve similar results.
The Deep Face Mask: My Verdict
If you’re looking to splurge, or want a nice gift for a friend who’s super ingredient-conscious, The Deep face mask from Caldera + Lab is a great pick. It’s made of top-notch ingredients, didn’t irritate my skin, is easy to use and rinses off smoothly. It can be left on for longer than other face masks I’ve used without irritation, and also pairs well with your favorite moisturizer.
