Until recently, most guys looked at skin care as an “either-or” proposition. Developing a skin care regimen was either for other guys, or guys used their girlfriends’ stuff on the sly. Now, the men’s skin care industry is booming. Per CNBC, the men’s personal care market could balloon to $166 billion by 2022. That’s a lot of money. And a lot of faces. This means that a lot of guys like you are taking the time to ensure that their skin stays healthy and looks youthful. Whether it’s a botox treatment for men or facial moisturizers, guys are embracing skin care.

Recently, we’ve discovered a new men’s skin care brand that we’re excited to share. So what separates Disco from all of the other upstart men’s grooming brands trying to capitalize on this trend?

Disco Skin Care has a complete line of products that cover everything from stinky pits to bacne and dry skin. Disco is based in Austin, Texas and its products are made in Los Angeles, a rarity for a grooming company. Disco skin care products are also plant-based. In fact, they’re vegan, non-GMO, cruelty-free and don’t contain parabens, phthalates, talc, gluten or fragrance.

Most important, their products really work.

Disco launched in 2019 with the support of board-certified dermatologist Dr. Eva Simmons-O’Brien. The Yale-educated doctor has worked with Disco to develop new skin care products specifically designed for guys’ skin. Men’s skin has a different pH balance than women’s skin, which is why you may have had mixed results when trying your girlfriend’s or wife’s skin care products. Those products just don’t have what men need. Disco’s products fall between 5.5-6.5 pH, so they protect your skin’s mantle.

Disco and Dr. Simmons-O’Brien have also gone out of their way to make these products easier for men to use. Since guys handle products differently, they made sure that Disco products such as the cleanser and eye cream came in a roll-on stick that mimics the design of deodorants. On top of that, all of the products are designed to last for three months and are available individually or in a subscription box.

With so many products to choose from, you may want to kick it off with the Disco Starter Set.

The starter set contains the brand’s Face Cleanser Stick, Face Scrub and Face Moisturizer. SPY has tested all three of these products, and we’ve found them to be a great combination for guys looking for effective anti-aging products. The stick cleanses, exfoliates and moisturizes in one step. (Active ingredients include activated charcoal, phytic acid and coconut oil.) The scrub, which should be used once or twice a week before shaving or before bed, has a blend of papaya, apricot and chamomile — perfect for working on breakouts and cleaning out pores. Their lightweight moisturizer has anti-aging ingredients that include macadamia oil, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Like most Disco products, all three of these products have the brand’s signature eucalyptus fragrance, which is subtle and refreshing.

We know that some guys are skeptical of new skincare brands, so if you only want to try one Disco product, then we recommend the Disco Rejuvenating Face Mask, which we’ve found to be perfect for guys dealing with acne or dry skin. Formulated with papaya, charcoal, bentonite clay, willow bark, eucalyptus and aloe, it’s gentle on your skin while also wiping away impurities and dirt. The company suggests that you use it three times a week. The mixture helps clean pores, draw out toxins and restore the skin’s natural pH balance.

Our editors and product testers have had the chance to review the entire Disco skin care line since the company launched in 2019, and we’ve included testing notes and pros and cons below.

Updates: This article about Disco skin care was originally published on August 22, 2020. We have since updated the article with additional Disco skin care reviews. This article was last updated on Wednesday, April 12 when we added additional information about two new Disco products: the Overnight Pimple Stickers and the Fountain of Youth supplements.

Mineral Sun Block SPF 30

SPY AWARD WINNER

We wrote about Disco’s excellent new mineral sun block when it was first released, and we also named it an award winner in The 2021 Man, our end-of-year product awards. This is a truly excellent daily face sunscreen, and we highly recommend it. Disco skincare reviews often praise the eucalyptus fragrance, and our product testers agree. Unlike a lot of fragrances in men’s grooming products, it’s not heavy-handed at all.

For a mineral sun block, this is an incredibly light product, and it absorbs more quickly than other mineral face sunscreens we’ve tried. A newer addition to the Disco skin care line, this product has already become one of our favorites.

The Pros: This is, hands down, one of the best mineral sunscreens we have ever used. There are two types of sunscreens, chemical and mineral, as a refresher. Chemical sunscreens go on clear but can irritate sensitive skin and potentially cause coral reef damage, depending on the chemicals used. Mineral, however, is better for sensitive skin and the environment but can (and usually does) cause a white cast, which is a big turnoff for those trying to use sunscreen every day — especially the bearded brethren. Enter the latest product from Disco, which earned a spot in The 2021 Man, our annual awards, as the Best Face Sunscreen. This zinc oxide-based sunscreen goes on easily and blends in beautifully. The slight tingle paired with the burst of eucalyptus scent makes this an easy step to remember in the morning.

The Cons: Fellas, we have to admit, the con list is short with this one. Finding a mineral sunscreen that absorbs and works on all skin tones and doesn’t cost a sunburned arm and leg is an excellent product if you ask us. If we had to complain about something, it does make our face look a little shiny, but even that subsided after about five minutes. That said, we would hope for a bit more than a 2-ounce tube for the price. However, if you subscribe to auto-ship, it comes in under $20. Having healthy, younger-looking skin is worth the price.

Disco Repairing Eye Stick

For guys dealing with under-eye bags, there’s the Disco Eye Stick.  It’s formulated with a potent mix of Pycnogenol (a strong antioxidant) that reduces puffiness and dark circle, Niacinamide (a type of Vitamin B3) and caffeine. Caffeine has antioxidant properties that will soothe skin while also helping reduce puffiness too. While the Repairing Eye Stick is one of Disco’s most popular products, it’s not one of our favorites.

Our product testers weren’t overly fond of the roller ball application, and while one of our team members did see visible reductions in dark circles, another SPY reviewer saw only very modest improvements.

The Pros: The Repairing Eye Stick is Disco’s most popular product, and rightfully so. You can feel the cooling effect of witch hazel and green tea as soon as it hits your skin, and it’s a wonderful sensation to experience first thing in the morning. The niacinamide contained within also does an excellent job of smoothing the under-eye area to create almost a blurring, dewy effect that instantly makes you look more awake and not like you’ve tossed and turned in bed all night. You also get a lot of product compared to most high-end creams and gels.

The Cons: While we certainly noticed a difference in the smoothness of skin texture, we felt like the popular Disco eye stick didn’t drastically reduce puffiness and dark circles. Caffeine and pycnogenol (an antioxidant derived from a French Maritime pine tree) are definitely present. Still, we feel like there are more substantial alternatives on the market with higher ingredient concentrations. The product was also a bit difficult to dispense with the roller ball applicator on more than one occasion, requiring a few hard taps on its base before you could visibly see it outside of the tube.

Rejuvenating Face Mask

SPY AWARD WINNER

After testing out this charcoal face mask for ourselves, we’ve been recommending it non-stop for its skin-restoring properties. Not only does this face mask leave your skin looking and feeling great, but it’s packed with some of our favorite skincare ingredients — charcoal, bentonite clay, aloe vera and more. We’ve recently named the Rejuvenating Face Mask from Disco one of the best men’s skincare products, full stop. It was also an award winner in The 2021 Man, our product awards.

The Pros: This mask feels great. It has the hallmarks of a great mask made for men: bentonite and kaolin clays, plus charcoal and aloe. In layman’s terms, this mask sucks up oil and gunk without drying our skin out. The addition of menthyl lactate — like menthol, but better for use in skincare — makes it instantly cool as the apricot kernel seed powder (which feels far less irritating when delivered via mask once or twice a week) stimulates and gets rid of dead, flakey skin.

The Cons: Spending $38 on a mask is a lot, but a mask in and of itself is an enjoyable addition to our usual skincare routine. The brand says that the 3.5-ounce jar is enough for two months, but if we use it, say, twice a week, we’re not sure it will make it that long. So the downside to this mask isn’t in the product; instead, in the idea of the product. Masks are something that we forget to do a lot, and as much as we genuinely loved the way this felt going on and left our skin feeling after it came off, the truth is, this one is no different. If finding the time to sit and do a mask isn’t an issue for you, then we can’t think of too much more to complain about.

Charcoal Face Cleanser Stick

This isn’t like other men’s face cleansers you’ve tried. Rather than a hard-to-wash-off gel, this face cleanser comes in a roll-on applicator. We love the natural ingredients, and it’s one of our favorite Disco products.

The Pros: This product was created for those who experience oily and acne-prone skin, and it more than delivers. The charcoal removes impurities with its toxin-absorbing properties, while coconut oil helps to break down dirt. It’s also enjoyable to apply a face cleanser in stick form and lathers exceptionally well once combined with water.

The Cons: We found the product to be slightly drying, and the scent went from refreshing eucalyptus to standard soapy, but we don’t have many complaints. This face cleanser is a star and will be an excellent addition to any morning skincare regimen.

Exfoliating Face Scrub

We love a good face scrub for men, and Disco makes an excellent product for exfoliation.

The Pros: Who doesn’t love a scrub? Mechanical scrubs, or those that use a physical exfoliant such as apricot kernel seed powder like this one, feel great on the skin, and this one is no exception. The burst of eucalyptus makes the experience that much better. Men prone to ingrown hairs might like this even more, as it is designed to help lift hair follicles and keep dead skin from clogging pores.

The Cons: The problem is that many scrubs are not great for your face. As we have matured in our knowledge of skincare, we have come to learn that you can get a lot of that hard exfoliating work done without all the heavy lifting. By that, we mean chemical exfoliants. This, however, feels marginally better than that controversial, albeit more affordable, drug store brand (you know the one) and might be the only disappointing product offered by Disco. We’re guilty of loving how good a gritty apricot face scrub can feel, but we’d be lying if we said we still used one on the regular.

Overnight Pimple Stickers

Disco’s new Overnight Pimple Stickers just launched on April 12, 2022. Disco sent SPY a sample of this new product for review, and we’re still in the process of testing these stickers. Once we’ve finished evaluating them, we’ll publish a full in-depth review and update this post with our thoughts. In the meantime, you can order them from the Disco online store for $18.

Hydrating Face Moisturizer

Looking for a new daily face moisturizer for men? Our Managing Editor Barret Wertz tested out this face moisturizer on his skin, and he had only positive things to say about the product itself.

The Pros: The lightweight formula is perfect for anyone fearful of breaking out. Its vitamin C content also boosts complexion while the vitamin E hydrates skin effectively, even in notoriously dry winter. While the eucalyptus scent can definitely turn a bit soapy (like the face cleanser stick), we found it to be pleasant and very spa-like upon application.

The Cons: Instructions say to use a penny-sized amount, but you may need slightly more in order to cover your neck area. We’d love to see this sold in a larger bottle because you will go through it quickly!

Natural Deodorant

For guys that want to get all of their grooming gear from the same place, DIsco also makes a natural, plant-based deodorant. It’s no surprise that this deodorant is based on Disco’s signature eucalyptus scent, which we love. Unfortunately, like most natural deodorants, it just won’t offer the protection you’ll get from genuine antiperspirants. Still, as far as plant-based natural deodorants go, this is a viable option.

The Pros: The natural deodorant had our favorite smell of the bunch. While Disco’s signature eucalyptus scent was still present, the brand paired it with a light and refreshing cologne that we’d love to bottle and spray throughout the day. We also appreciated that the formula was aluminum-free and not full of the harmful chemicals that most mainstream deodorants add to their products.

The Cons: It simply doesn’t last, unfortunately, which is the case with quite a few natural deodorants. This may be a great option for a quick trip to the grocery store or lounging around the house, but don’t expect it to hold up for all-day coverage or during an intense gym session. The smell is so good, we almost don’t mind keeping it close and reapplying throughout the day, but at $14, that’s a pretty hefty price tag.

Invigorating Body Wash

This men’s body wash is another one of Disco’s top-sellers, and we were impressed with its soothing formula and cleaning abilities. In fact, after showering with this body wash, we recently rated it the best overall product in this category.

The Pros: It’s apparent that aloe is a primary ingredient because our skin was generally soft and smooth after consistent use. It also did a great job eliminating odors, especially under the armpits. The lather was abundant, and a little goes a long way, so $22 isn’t too much of an expense if you’re mindful of how much you squeeze.

The Cons: The scent disappeared almost immediately — once you finished bathing, there was virtually no trace of it left on your skin. We also found the formula to be a bit drying behind the legs and on the elbows, which can easily be remedied by moisturizing, but it’s something to note if you suffer from cracking or flaking.

Fountain of Youth Supplements

Fountain of Youth capsules come in a little purple jar, and they are Disco’s first supplement. So far, these skin health supplements are only available via subscription, and you can purchase a 30-day supply on the Disco website for $42. Disco sent SPY these supplements for review before their launch on March 1, and so far, our product tester says his skin doesn’t feel any different. We’re normally big fans of Disco products, but this is our least-favorite release from the company so far.

Disco says that these supplements are packed with a ton of ingredients that will support your overall skin health, but considering the high price tag, we’re not sure we would purchase these on our own. You can find a wide range of affordable supplements and vitamins online at a much lower price.

Pros: These skin-supporting supplements are made in the USA and contain Niacin, Vitamin B6, Zinc, Copper and probiotics.

Cons: These daily supplements are expensive, and so far, we haven’t noticed a big effect.
