Turn Your Laundry Green (Not Literally) With the Tablet That’s Changing the Way We Wash Our Wares

Laundry detergent? We don’t know her.

Ever since the invention of the laundry pod, we’ve been chucking our pre-packaged detergent in with our dirty underwear like it’s no big deal. It’s much easier, more compact and less messy than using liquid detergent to clean your laundry. Each individual pod is filled perfectly to provide a thorough, clean wash. With liquid detergent, the anxiety caused by potentially putting too much or too little is tiresome. Plus, having to carry that massive jug all the way to the laundromat each time? No thanks.

But, we’ve always had one question regarding our favorite little cleaning pods. They’re covered in plastic from the start, but where does it go? It dissolves straight into the water, hiding tiny particles of plastic in that water essentially forever.

Approximately 11 billion PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) plastic-wrapped laundry pods are used in the United States alone each year. The amount of plastic we have been disintegrating into our water supply is absolutely insane. But, liquid detergent isn’t even a better alternative — 700 million plastic laundry jugs are discarded each year in the US too. Given that we have to wash our clothes to stay hygienic, there has to be another way we can clean our loads in an eco-friendly manner. Luckily for us, there finally is.

The Blueland Laundry Starter Set is officially the first PVA-free “pod” working to change the future of how we wash our clothes. The pod itself isn’t actually a pod at all though, but instead a nude white laundry tablet that doesn’t come individually wrapped or coated in any form of plastic. Each tablet arrives in a bulk, compostable package and is complete with a cutely colored reusable tin canister for no-fuss storage.

You use the laundry tablets any way you’re currently using your regular laundry pod. Throw them in before, in the middle or after you throw your clothes in — just never after you begin your cycle. Each tablet is fragrance-free which is excellent for those who don’t love the overwhelming scent other brands like Gain and Tide leave on your clean clothes. All you get at the end of your cycle is a fresh feel and consistency.

The tablets can be used with a majority of regular fabrics, including cotton, linen, denim, polyester, rayon, acetate and Tencel, so you won’t have to worry about ruining your clothes in your green cleaning machine.

The Blueland Laundry Starter Set goes for just $18 right on Blueland’s site. Your first order comes with 40 different tablets and as previously mentioned, a really cute cylindrical tin for safekeeping. If you’re looking to order again and again and again (which, you’ll want to), save the tin forever because each additional order comes packaged separately.
