Whether you’re in school, commuting to an office every day, or working from home, there’s a good chance you need a desk. Having a desk in your home comes with several benefits, including creating a designated workspace, keeping you organized, and providing a separation between work, study time, socializing and relaxing time.

Communal work areas in the home like the kitchen table can be beneficial for young children who need help with homework, but as we get older, having our own dedicated space to keep essays, projects, files, and work organized and away from common areas can help boost productivity and provide a sense of calm. If you’re sharing a workspace with your partner or kids, the likelihood of papers, chargers, and files getting lost, damaged or sticky is much higher. If there are kids involved, things always get sticky.

Finding a desk that suits your needs is an essential step in creating a space where you can work, study, or relax by surfing the web or playing your favorite video game. We’ve included three of our favorite office desks that all provide different and specific functions, whether you want a traditional desk, one that is more chic and streamlined, or one that is designed specifically for gamers. One thing these affordable desks do have in common is that they’re designed to make your life easier by providing a smart and open workspace.

1. Ameriwood Home Dakota L-Shaped Desk

Built with smart features like grommet holes to keep cords untangled and out of sight and a built-in bookshelf for extra storage, the Ameriwood Home Dakota L-Shaped Desk is a clean and traditional addition to any home office.

Pros: The Ameriwood measures 28.25” H x 51.3125” W x 53.625” D and is the biggest desk on our list with the ability to support up to 100 pounds, making it perfect for students or professionals who place heavy textbooks or documents on their workspace. The desk has a traditional dark espresso finish and is made from laminated particleboard, making it easy to wipe down and clean (coffee spillers, take note). The L-shaped desk is designed to fit against a wall or in a corner and we like that the Ameriwood comes with a bonus bookshelf for extra storage, keeping essential items like files and chargers nearby.

Cons: The desk cannot be reversed, which may be a deal breaker if you want the bookshelf on the left side of the desk. Some customers noted that the desk scratches easily and that taller people have issues fitting their legs under the desk.

2. Atlantic Gaming Desk

With a designated space for smartphones, drinks, game storage, speaker stands and more, the Atlantic Gaming Desk is the smart desk that gamers will love.

Pros: Designed specifically for gamers, the Atlantic features several intuitive additions that are ideal for people who spend long hours in front of the computer. The desk has a charging stand for tablets and smartphones, a drink holder, game storage, speaker stands, an under-desk basket, a controller stand, a headset hook, a rear power strip holder and more. The desk has a built-in monitor stand that can support a 27-inch monitor and can be removed to accommodate up to a 32-inch monitor. We like that the Atlantic also has a younger look, with a sleek charcoal colored carbon fiber laminated top that won’t look out of place in a bedroom, living room, or designated gaming room.

Cons: Some customers found that assembly was complicated and that the add-ons, including gaming shelves and cup holders, were difficult to attach.

3. Walker Edison Soreno Modern 3-Piece Corner Desk

With a modern aesthetic thanks to its glass and steel materials, the Walker Edison Soreno Modern 3-Piece Corner Desk provides a sleek and sturdy workspace.

Pros: Great for students or office workers who want a large workspace, the Walker measures 51″ W x 20″ D x 29 ” H and includes a keyboard tray and CPU stand. The steel frame has added durability thanks to a powder coat finish and the top of the desk is comprised of polished and tempered safety glass. We like that the two rectangular desk pieces are the same size and that the keyboard tray can be mounted on either side, making it easy to fit the Walker into any space (the Walker can also be disassembled and used as two separate desks).

Cons: Because of the desk’s open design, it is difficult to hide wires.
