Get Your Own Supervillain Chair Like Dr. Evil from Austin Powers and Plot Global Domination

Why do evil geniuses love to sit in high-backed swivel chairs? We don’t know, but they’re basically synonymous with being evil.  Simultaneously comfy, but also a little futuristic. The perfect chair for intimidating your henchmen and plotting global domination.

The most recognizable supervillain chair is the egg chair. First created by acclaimed designer Arne Jacobsen back in 1958, the egg chair has since taken on a life of its own. They were popular movie props in the late 90s and early aughts, with everyone from Mr. Mugatu in Zoolander to Will Smith in Men in Black sitting in one. Even Stanley Kubrick, director of such sci-fi epics like 2001: A Space Odyssey, has used a number of egg chairs in his films.

If you want to channel your own inner supervillain via interior design, you have to look to the 1967 James Bond film You Only Live Twice. In the film, SPECTRE leader Blofeld, played by Donald Pleasence, sat in the iconic G-Plan 6250 Swivel Chair. You can still buy this chair today, as British furnituremaker G-Plan re-issued their classic supervillain chair recently as the G-Plan “The Sixty Two” series. It will cost you about $3,000 (or £2,400), but it’s the perfect furniture for aspiring villains.

What about the Dr. Evil chair from Austin Powers? When Mike Myers played the International Man of Mystery foe Dr. Evil, his supervillain sat in another famous piece of furniture from the 1960s. According to Film and Furniture, Dr. Evil can be seen sitting in the iconic Ox Chair, designed by famed Danish furniture designer Hans Wegner.
