Admittedly, there have been many inventions that are more important than toilet paper, but we still think TP rates pretty high on the list of greatest products ever made. Most of us don’t go a day (or even hours) without using some highly cushioned paper on our derrieres. Trying to figure out how many squares of toilet paper the average person uses in their life feels like a mathematical impossibility, but one thing we do know is that it makes a difference what you wipe with.
Toilet paper has the tough job of cleaning up messes while still being gentle on users. It also needs to be affordable, since we literally use it every day, and preferably, it needs to be gentle on the environment. Recently there’s been a push towards more eco-friendly options, including toilet paper made with recycled paper and bamboo toilet paper. We’ve included both on our list as well as toilet paper made from virgin pulp.
Recycled toilet paper is made from recycled paper (not recycled toilet paper — gross). Bamboo toilet paper is also gaining in popularity because of its makeup. Bamboo grows quickly, is a highly renewable resource, and requires no pesticides or fertilizers that can be harmful to the environment. Bamboo helps to fight deforestation and in terms of customer appeal, it’s also extremely soft and strong. Plus, it’s 100% biodegradable which is good for the environment and your toilet’s environment (septic tank users, take note).
Make toilet time your happy place with toilet paper that gets you clean and helps clean up the environment.

4. Reel Tree-Free Toilet Paper
BEST BAMBOO TOILET PAPER
Reel markets itself as a brand that makes ‘life-changing paper’ and they’re not wrong. The company is proving that toilet paper doesn’t have to be harmful to the environment and can still be affordable. Reel’s rolls are 100% bamboo and tree-free, biodegradable (safe for septic tanks!) and they don’t come with anything that can be harmful to the earth or your bum, including plastic, fragrance, dyes, chlorine, inks or BPA. The three-ply toilet paper still delivers all the softness and absorbency of traditional toilet paper without any of the environmentally harmful side effects. We also like that Reel donates a significant portion of their profits to organizations helping to provide toilets and sanitation to people in Haiti.
5. Betterway Bamboo Toilet Paper
GOOD FOR SENSITIVE SKIN
Betterway is making, well, a better way for people to use toilet paper. Based in the US, Betterway is also a carbon-neutral company that has plastic-free, compostable packaging.
6. Tushy Premium Bamboo Toilet Paper
We’re big fans of Tushy (check out our reviews on their Ottoman Toilet Stool and Travel Bidet) and that includes their bamboo toilet paper. The company is focused on sustainability, which is why they use bamboo to create their recently updated toilet paper, which is now larger and softer than before. Tushy makes their toilet paper without bleach or emulsifying agents, keeping things natural and comfortable because that’s exactly what your time on the toilet should be. Since bamboo is 100% biodegradable, Tushy is safe for all toilets, including those run on septic tanks. As if that wasn’t enough to make you try Tushy, the company also packages their rolls individually in recycled paper that you won’t mind guests seeing in your bathroom.
7. Who Gives A Crap? 100% Recycled Toilet Paper
MADE FROM RECYCLED PAPER
Who Gives A Crap is another company that is making toilet paper more eco-friendly and helping to give back to those in need. The company sells bamboo toilet paper and the more affordable 100% Recycled Toilet Paper. Don’t worry, it’s not actually made from recycled toilet paper (ew), but instead from recycled office paper. Okay, we’re fine with that. The super-soft three-ply sheets are gentle on your bum and the earth and the company participates in carbon-neutral shipping. Like Tushy, Who Gives A Crap individually packages their roll in fun and bold prints. They also donate 50% of their profits to charities that bring clean water and sanitation to those in need.
