The “Glacier National Park” wool blanket features historic markings and colors that date back to the days of frontier trading posts. Crafted from 100% pure virgin wool and made in the USA, the Glacier National Park throw is part of a series of blankets made by Oregon-based Pendleton Woolen Mills that commemorates America’s National Parks. This particular one was the first in the series and originally introduced in the early 1900s.
According to Pendleton, the Glacier National Park throw and the nine others in the National Parks series all share a common thread: traders would indicate the weight of the blanket offered in exchange for furs, by holding up one finger for each pound. The original blankets incorporated three, four or five black stripes in the design, which indicated the value of the blanket.
Each one in the series has since been updated to reflect the unique qualities of each park in an assortment of colors and variations of the original striped theme. And yes, they’re still woven and made in Pendleton’s original mill. Each National Parks blanket features a woven label with the park’s name, as well as a unique natural feature of said park.
