We know that wine tastes better as it ages, which is why the older the bottle of wine, the more expensive it tends to be. But that aging process is only good as long as the wine is being properly stored and that means securely corked. Once a bottle has been opened, the countdown begins to it going from a dry and delightful Cabernet Sauvignon to a bottle that is suddenly being passed around the table with the invitation to “sniff this and tell me if it smells funny.” In most cases, the wine has gone off likely because it has been open for too long. So, what if you are a slow sipper and like to enjoy the same bottle of wine over a few days or weeks? Then you need a wine preserver.

Wine preservers serve two major functions. The first is to act as a vacuum seal on the bottle. By removing all the air, the wine preserver stops the wine from oxidizing, which can spoil it. Because of the tight seal created by the preserver, it also serves a second function, which is keeping the wine contained in the bottle and stopping it from spilling. Who would knock over a whole bottle of wine? It happens (and here’s how to clean it).

To get the best out of your wine, it’s critical to store it at the correct temperature in a wine fridge and enjoy it soon after uncorking it. But to give yourself a little extra time and keep the integrity of the wine at its best, a wine preserver is not only a great item to gift the wine lover in your life, but it’s also an excellent item to keep on hand in your kitchen even if you’re not a wine connoisseur yourself. You may have guests that will enjoy a glass of wine and you likely don’t want to have to open a new bottle every time.

For wine preservers that will give your bottle an extra week, month or even year (yes, year!), check out our top picks below.

1. Coravin Model Three Advanced Wine Bottle Opener and Preservation System

Wine begins oxidizing as soon as it’s exposed to air, which happens when the cork is removed. But what if you could drink your wine without removing the cork? It’s possible with the Coravin Model Three Advanced Wine Bottle Opener and Preservation System. The Coravin uses a wine needle to gently pierce corks (including synthetic), giving users the ability to pour their wine using the trigger release and easy pour spout. The Coravin then sends inert argon gas into the bottle to ensure oxidization does not occur. Once you’re done enjoying your wine, you can remove the needle and the wine is preserved for weeks, months or even years. Seriously, years.

2. Private Preserve Wine Preservation System

Whether you like to reuse your cork or have a favorite stopper, the Private Preserve Wine Preservation System is an ingenious way to preserve wine without another bulky contraption to add to your kitchen drawers. When you are ready to preserve your bottle of wine and re-cork it, simply spray some of the Private Preserve into the bottle and then seal it with a cork or bottle stopper. The spray is made with 100% inert gas, which is a balanced mixture of carbon dioxide, nitrogen and argon. This non-toxic spray removes all the oxygen from the bottle, thus stopping the oxidization process. Each can of Private Preserve has enough gas for 120 bottles of wine.

3. Vacu Vin Wine Saver

For a wine preserver that is easy to use, we like the Vacu Vin Wine Saver. Users simply place one of the stoppers over a bottle of wine and then use the Vacu Vin vacuum sealer to remove any excess air from the bottle. The vacuum will make a clicking noise when the air has been removed, indicating to users that their bottle is now preserved and ready to be stored. When it’s time to enjoy the wine, users simply press the middle section in the stopper and release the seal. The Vacu Vin seals fit any standard wine bottle and the stoppers can be reused.

4. Repour Wine Saver

For a wine preserver that is ideal for travel, we like the Repour Wine Saver. Designed to fit into the opening of a standard size bottle of wine, one Repour can absorb the oxygen of 1500ML of air. The single-use stoppers begin to work once the foil has been removed from the bottom of the Repour and it is inserted in the bottle. The material in the top of the stopper absorbs oxygen and depletes its active ingredient, keeping wine fresh for months. The Repour can be removed and users can pour themselves a glass of wine and reinsert the stopper, but one Repour is only designed to be used for a single bottle of wine, making this a great option for travel or for users who drink infrequently.

7. Wine Squirrel Wine Preserving Glass Decanter

Wine decanters are used to allow wine to breathe, which helps them reach the full expression of their flavors. It seems counterintuitive to use a decanter design for a wine preserver since air leads to oxidization, but the Wine Squirrel Wine Preserving Glass Decanter not only preserves wine but makes it easy to store. The Wine Squirrel provides an airtight seal that can keep wine fresh for weeks. Users simply pour their bottle of wine into the decanter and push down the airtight seal until they reach the liquid, similar to the way you would use a French press coffee maker. The seal on the Wine Squirrel is so secure that wine can be stored horizontally in the fridge and won’t spill. The Wine Squirrel is an attractive glass decanter that will look good when serving guests and helps to keep wine at its peak flavor for an extended period.

8. Sello 2 Wine Preservation System

For a wine preserver and pourer in one, we like the Sello 2 Wine Preservation System. Using active packaging technology, Sello works with refillable cartridges that absorb oxygen and excess moisture within the bottle to ensure the wine is preserved and keeps its original flavor. The preserver has a spot to place a new cartridge for each bottle and once the system is installed into the neck of the bottle, it creates a tight seal and has a removable lid that provides a dripless pour solution.

9. Air Cork Wine Preserver

For a wine preserver that doubles as a conversation piece, we like the simple but creative design of the Air Cork Wine Preserver. Famous for its appearance on Shark Tank, the preserver works by using a pump to inflate a balloon that opens up inside the wine bottle and stops air from oxidizing the contents of the bottle. Designed for use in a standard size wine bottle, the preserver helps wine last an extra four days and each balloon lasts for at least 80 uses. A great option for gifts, the preserver looks like a novelty item thanks to its grape bushel hand pump but provides excellent results.
