How you enjoy a bottle of wine is up to you, but with this hand-blown number from designer Daniele Semeraro, we wouldn’t hold it against you if you wanted to do a little decanting first.
So what’s the deal with decanting? Without getting scientific about it, the act of decanting is simply transferring wine from the bottle to another vessel before serving. Why you’d want to do that could be debated ad nauseum but it basically boils down to two things: separating sediment and aerating the wine to unlock its flavor.
Older wines tend to have sediment build up and it’s definitely not something you want to be ingesting. Not that it’s unsafe for you. It’s just gross and tends to be bitter when imbibed along with the wine. The angled nature of Semeraro’s decanter helps separate the sediment while you pour.
The design also helps keep the wine from splashing out while you swirl. Keep in mind, however, that swirling the wine doesn’t aerate it any faster. Simply pouring it out activates the process and depending on the vintage, the flavor profile can change over time. Your mileage will vary, of course.
From Swedish company, Sempli, this handblown crystal decanter is a beautiful addition to your display cabinet or bar cart, combining Scandinavian minimalism with Italian craftsmanship. It also makes for a wonderful gift, lovingly presented in a handsome gift box and with an accompanying gift card. You can also have it engraved for a more personal touch.
