Spy Finds is a daily series that unveils the coolest, under-the-radar products that you haven’t heard of until now. Each product is curated by our editors who want to help you discover cool finds you didn’t know you needed.
Pretty much all of the Spy Finds we share with you are the latest, the coolest, the “gee-I-can’t-believe-it-does-that” new thing. So maybe you weren’t expecting a trip in the Wayback Machine, but some things just stand the test of time so well that they’re worth revisiting.
Lodge’s Legacy Series Bacon & Egg Griddle is almost exactly as it was in Lodge’s product catalogs from the ’30s, right down to the fried-egg eyes and bacon smile. Chances are, your grandmother used something very similar to this when she made breakfast. Chances are even better that whatever cast-iron cookware she used came from Lodge, the company that’s been making heirloom-quality cookware since 1896.
This version of the ’30s Bacon & Egg Griddle has a few modifications. The dividers are now fully connected to let you keep your food totally separate if you so choose. Not everybody wants to cook eggs in bacon grease as they did back in the day. (But they should because, seriously, it’s freaking delicious.) There’s also a large pour spout to make it easier to drain grease from the pan.
Other than that? It’s a Lodge cast iron skillet, and that is pretty much the best and only endorsement you need if you’re looking to add a virtually indestructible, amazingly useful piece of cookware to your kitchen. It’s a true powerhouse on the stovetop, in the oven or even on a grill. It has incredible heat retention and the surface area heats more evenly than virtually any other kind of cookware. It sears, bakes, grills, fries and does pretty much anything you ask.
And, as long as you’re diligent about cleaning and seasoning it after every use, it will last more or less forever. It’s incredibly hard to wear out cast iron, and even harder to break it, which is why Lodge cookware is handed down from generation to generation. The surface is naturally non-stick and becomes even more so the more you use and season it. (The Bacon & Egg Griddle comes seasoned with 100% natural vegetable oil, and should be re-seasoned after every use.)
It’s an old-school beauty that has yet to be improved upon. Cook up your bacon and eggs, drain the grease and bring the pan straight to the table. (On a trivet, please, because it’s awfully hot.) The food left in the pan will stay nice and warm until you’re ready to move it to your plate. And because it’s Lodge Cast Iron, you can do this for years and years to come. It can be your new Sunday brunch tradition, and then your kids’, because the Lodge Legacy Series Bacon & Egg Griddle will be around for them, too.
