* Toiletpaper is an Italian magazine specializing in quirky imagery
* Founding artists, Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari, have created a line of dishes
* “Seletti Wears Toiletpaper” is full of vintage-inspired mugs, trays and plates
In case you haven’t heard, toilet paper is kind of awesome. No, we don’t mean the white stuff you use in the bathroom. We’re referring to the magazine called Toiletpaper. Created by Italian artists, Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari, the publication is picture-based, striving to create images that live beyond the pages.
In recent years, Toiletpaper and its artists have begun to create everyday objects full of photographs and imagery that makes us question today’s society. To follow this theme, Cattelan and Ferrari have teamed up with homeware designer Seletti to create this crazy kitchen set. Just a tad bit disturbing, these totally unique mugs, trays and plates exude modernity and pop culture. Why not add something quirky to your kitchen? Bonus: these art-inspired pieces double as functional everyday items, too.
1. I Love You Mug
From first sight this mug may just look like every other “I love you” mug. But on closer inspection, you’ll find the classic phrase has been replaced with pictures of a knife, a bloodied heart and a horseshoe. Whether your partner will find this unusual declaration affectionate is down to them, but this quirky enamel mug is sure to raise plenty of eyebrows.
2. Eat Soap Mug
This mug will definitely make you ask some questions. The first is most likely, “what is that?” It’s soap. As to why someone took a bite, we have no idea. But the fun and intrigue is worth every penny.
3. Fingers Tray
This is perhaps Cattelan and Ferrari’s most famous piece. The glamorous hands on a blue background were displayed on the billboard at Highline Park in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood in 2012. Now, you can own your own copy of the image on a functional kitchen tray. It’s certainly great for serving finger foods.
4. Breakfast Tray
If you like to have your breakfast pegged down in the morning, check out this serving platter. The tray depicts a full breakfast of eggs, toast and bacon. But if you look closer, you’ll notice that the plate is missing. Instead, the food is nailed to the tray. Perhaps you should try serving your next brunch the same way.
5. Toad Sandwich Plate
Don’t expect Toiletpaper to make a boring old plate. This one comes with a free serving suggestion for… toads. While you probably shouldn’t add our jumping friends to your next sandwich, this toad in a bun certainly makes a statement. Although, maybe give serving burgers on this plate a miss.
6. Painful Pinching Plate
It hurts so good, but we’re not quite sure what’s going on here. Are we supposed to think this person is sunbathing? Or are they into something kinky? We’ll let you decide. Either way, the mixed emotions that this plate brings will give you something to think about each time you pull it out of the cabinet.
