* World Economic Forum offered budget-friendly list of cheap travel destinations
* Countries ranked in accordance with a wider emphasis on financial factors
* Some countries on list not safe to travel to due to terror threats

Yesterday we shared a list of the safest cities to travel to in the world, according to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) biennial report for 2017. The WEF’s ranking of best overall travel destinations resulted with Germany and France at the top of the list. But which countries are the cheapest to travel to?

The WEF compiled a separate list in the report for budget-conscious travelers, listing the 20 most “price-competitive” destinations around the globe. This list is judged by examining a wider range of financial determinants, judging financial factors and cost comparisons with greater stringency.

Iran took first place, scoring a 6.66 for its price-competitiveness rating, with neighboring Egypt trailing closely behind as the second cheapest travel destination. Iran and Egypt house some of the greatest sight-seeing landmarks in the world including Egypt’s pyramids of Giza and Iran’s Jameh Mosque of Isfahan.

Southeast Asia was also ranked high on the price competitive scale, with Malaysia and Indonesia scoring the 3rd and 5th spot, respectively. Algeria landed number 4 on the list, highlighted as a great country for tourism due to its plethora of sight-seeing opportunities and elegant culture.

But while some countries on the report may be cheap travel destinations, that doesn’t mean they’re safe to travel to at the moment. For instance, Yemen and Tunisia ranked number 7 and 9 on the list, but unsurprisingly, the foreign office advises against traveling to these places due to heightened terror threats. India, Russia and Qatar scored well on the list too –though Qatar’s capital city, Doha, was previously ranked high for most expensive travel destinations in another poll. Rounding off the list of cheapest travel destinations are popular tourist spots including Thailand, Guatemala, and Nepal.

On the other end of the spectrum, Switzerland scored first place, beating the United Kingdom just slightly for the most expensive country for travelers. Barbados, Israel, and Iceland rounded off the list of priciest places. For reference, the United States earned a score of 4.44 for price competitiveness, coming in at 106 on the list as one of the most expensive countries to travel to.
