Even if you weep for the end of summer and dread the cold of winter, you have to admit that fall is pretty spectacular–and not just because of football season and pumpkin spice. The crisp weather and the turning leaves are what makes this time of year so great.
Whether you want a weekend getaway or need to burn vacation time before the end of the year, fall is a great time to plan a trip. Here are the six best places to visit if you’d like to see some fall foliage.
1. Sequoia National Park, CA
Rustic-minded travelers should consider a trip to Sequoia National Park in California. Spanning over 400,000 acres, there are plenty of landmarks to see, but some of the most popular include the granite cliffs of Tokopah Falls and Sherman Tree Trail, a 0.8 mile (round trip) paved trail. Truly outdoorsy visitors can stay at one of the park’s 14 campsites, but folks who prefer creature comforts can book a stay at one of the surrounding lodges.

2. Catskill Mountains, New York
East Coasters looking for a weekend away this fall should consider the Catskill Mountains. The hiking trails of Slide Mountain (the Catskill’s highest peak) provide an excellent setting for Instagram photos. If you’re staying in the town of Catskill, be sure to visit the Thomas Cole National Historic Site and Dutchman’s Landing.

3. Nashville, TN
Not only is Nashville home to the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry, but it’s also a great place to take in fall foliage. Plan a day trip to one of the city’s historic locations, like Belmont Mansion or Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage, and admire the beauty. If you prefer to steer clear of the typical tourist attractions, check out Centennial Park or Cumberland Park.

4. Pittsburgh, PA
Pittsburgh may be home to the Steelers, but there’s plenty more to see besides football. Take a leisurely stroll on the trails of Frick Park, or check out the view of downtown from Schenley Park–all while surrounded by beautiful fall foliage. While you’re in town, be sure to visit the Mattress Factory and The Andy Warhol Museum. Then take a ride up the Monongahela Incline for a breathtaking view of the city.

5. Seattle, WA
Best known for Grunge Rock and the Space Needle, Seattle, WA also offers beautiful fall foliage. Visit Kerry Park in the Queen Anne Hill neighborhood to see the fall colors, and don’t miss Chihuly Garden and Glass or the The Museum of Flight while you’re in town.

6. Spearfish, SD
Motorcycle enthusiasts may recognize this small town in the Black Hills of South Dakota for its proximity to the Sturgis Rally, but it’s also a great place to admire the beauty of fall. Visit Spearfish Canyon and Bridal Veil Falls to see the foliage, and be sure to stop by the Spirit of the Hills Wildlife Sanctuary before you taste beer at Crow Peak Brewing Company.
