* UTIs are caused by a buildup of bacteria in the urinary tract
* Some essential oils are known antibacterials
* Using them in diffusers or topically can soothe painful UTI symptoms

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are the worst. They are painful and irritating. On top of that, the trips to the bathroom every few minutes are completely disruptive and embarrassing.

UTIs are caused by an overgrowth of bacteria in the urinary tract, and this infection is usually treated with antibiotics. However, such antibiotics sometimes have unpleasant side effects and don’t necessarily treat the pain associated with the infection until the bacteria is eliminated.

In recent years, some studies have shown that antibacterial, over the counter essential oils can be used to soothe and perhaps prevent UTIs. It’s important to note that essential oils should not be used as a replacement for antibiotics. They are simply intended to help soothe the symptoms of UTIs.

To use essential oils to soothe your UTI, you’ll need to place a few drops in a diffuser for aromatherapy. Alternatively, some oils can be mixed with a carrier oil and applied topically to the skin.

1. Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus essential oil is known to be a wide range antibacterial. A 2016 study even showed it to be effective in killing S. aureus, E. coli and Listeria innocua among other pathogens. If you aren’t sure which bacteria is causing your frequent UTIs, regularly using eucalyptus in your diffuser may help prevent frequent infections.

2. Clove Bud Essential Oil

The bacteria E. coli is the most common cause of urinary tract infections. Luckily, clove bud essential oil has been shown to be effective in killing and slowing the growth of this bacteria. A recent study also hints that clove bud essential oil may also be capable of stopping E. coli that has become resistant to certain antibiotics. Use this oil in a diffuser for the best results.

3. Cinnamon Cassia Essential Oil

Have you ever wondered what gives cinnamon its flavor? The chemical Cinnamaldehyde is responsible for that. That same chemical might also be capable of stopping the growth of E. coli and preventing recurrence of UTIs. So, if you suffer from frequent infections, consider using cinnamon cassia essential oil in your diffuser and adding more cinnamon spice into your diet.

4. Coriander Essential Oil

Some essential oils are most effective when paired with antibiotics. That’s certainly the case of coriander essential oil, which has been shown to kill a combination of E. coli and S. aureus. During the study, scientists also found that coriander essential oil was effective against some drug-resistant strains of bacteria when combined with antibiotics. Therefore, this essential oil should mostly be used in combination with medical treatments rather than as a preventative measure.

5. Cumin Essential Oil

Cumin essential oil is another option that is most effective when paired with antibiotics. This powerful antibacterial is known to kill E. coli as well as a few other pathogens. If your doctor has prescribed medicine for your UTI, use cumin essential oil in a diffuser once or twice a day as a complimentary natural remedy.

6. Oregano Essential Oil

A well-known antimicrobial and antibacterial, oregano essential oil has long been studied as a natural treatment for UTIs. In 2012, scientists found that oregano oil could stop the growth of drug-resistant E. coli. And in 2015, another study showed this oil was more effective at fighting bacteria than other essential oils such as lavender. Because of this, oregano oil is one of the most recommended natural soothers for urinary tract infections.

7. Basil Essential Oil

Basil essential oil doesn’t just smell great. It is also effective at fighting bacteria like E. coli as shown in this 2013 study. In particular, the doTerra version of the oil is recommended thanks to its intense, spicy aroma. Basil essential oil can be used in a diffuser or diluted in coconut oil for topical use.
