If you want to track your fitness but not be strapped down by a bulky bracelet, we’ve found something you’ll definitely want to check out. It’s called the Motiv Ring, and it’s a new type of activity tracker that counts your steps, calories burned and activity rate all from a stylish piece of jewelry you slide over your finger.

How Does Motiv Ring Work?

Motiv is the first company to fit an optical heart rate sensor into a ring this size. The ring detect your heart rate from your finger. According to the company, because fingers tend to have less hair and fewer tattoos than your wrists, Motiv Ring can collect more accurate and quality readings than most wrist-based devices.

Here’s what Motiv Ring measures:

  • Active Minutes
  • Resting Heartrate
  • Activity Types
  • Calories Burned
  • Activity Intensity
  • Steps
  • Sleep Duration
  • Distance

The ring sends info to your phone via Bluetooth, though the “chip” they use is barely perceptible. I wore my Motiv Ring every day, taking it to my spin class, Barry’s Bootcamp, on a hike and just on regular errands around town.

The ring is made from a durable titanium material, and it’s waterproof too. Once of my first concerns was washing my hands with the ring on, but after emailing Motiv’s customer service team, they assured me that the ring can actually be worn while swimming or diving (it’s waterproof up to 5 ATM, which is 165 feet). In other words, running it under the sink to wash my hands would not be a problem.

I don’t like wearing anything on my hands while I sleep, but Motiv is actually really great for sleep tracking, too. The ring automatically detects when you fall asleep and wake up. And Motiv Ring calculates Resting Heart Rate while you get your zzzz’s.

How To Sync Your Motiv Ring To The App

To keep track of my stats, I downloaded the Motiv app onto my iPhone (you can also transfer info from the app to Apple Health). It’s super easy to read and let me know when I had the most active minutes during the day. It also tracked my steps walked and calories burned. Because it gives you the option of viewing your stats over a week (and the option to scroll through to look at past weeks), it’s an easy way to stay motivated, to beat your previous numbers. This was me after a couple hours of hiking in Palm Springs:

When I first started using the ring, I kept my phone nearby, thinking it needed to be close-at-hand to sync up my results. Turns out, there’s no need to be tethered to your phone if you want to work out. Motiv Ring has two days of onboard memory storage without syncing. So forget about dragging your phone to your bootcamp class. Motiv Ring will automatically sync your data with your phone when you get home.

How To Wear Your Motiv Ring

Your days of fussing around with a big bracelet or trying to look presentable with a chunky smart watch are over. At less than 0.1 inches thick, Motiv Ring is thinner than two nickels and weighs less than a penny. Available in rose gold or black, it’s a piece of wearable tech that actually works with your everyday wardrobe, rather than standing out conspicuously (“Oh, I love how well that Fitbit looks with Anna’s date night dress,” said no one ever).

I received a Motiv Ring to test and I’ve gotten more compliments on my matte black ring over the past month than I’ve ever gotten on any actual item of clothing I’ve worn. When I reveal that it’s not just a fashion ring, but one that actually serves an important function, the looks of surprise soon turn into looks of jealousy. But whatever, because they’ll just have to get their own ring.

I was a little skeptical at first of wearing a ring, since it’s not typically something I wear, but Motiv sent me a very easy-to-use “sizing kit” that let me try on different sizes for a day or two, to find the one that fit me best. I even took one of my sample rings to a spin class, to make sure it wouldn’t fly off my fingers during a “tap back” or from sweating too much. In the end, I settled on a size 10 – not too tight but snug enough to stay on my finger during a workout.

How Do You Charge Your Motiv Ring?

The Motiv package comes with a USB key that you use for charging. Simply “clip” the ring onto the USB key and then plug it into any USB port to get started. I’ve been plugging the USB key into my laptop computer to charge the ring, and it only takes about 90 minutes to fully charge. Once charged, you’ll typically get about three days of battery life.

What Are Some Drawbacks With Motiv Ring?

To be honest, there really weren’t any negatives about using the ring. I guess if you’re used to reading your results on a digital display or need a screen on you at all times, then the small size and nature of wearing a ring won’t work for you. But having used Motiv Ring in a dimly-lit workout environment, I found it way less annoying and noticeable than the bracelets and watches other people had on that kept flashing in the room.
