Summer is just around the corner, which means longer days, warmer temperatures and for some, more trouble sleeping at night. That’s because many people sleep better in cool environments. One 2012 study found that cooler temperatures had a positive impact on sleep for many subjects, while exposure to warm temperatures increased wakefulness. Anecdotally, a lot of people have found that sleeping under bedsheets and blankets in combination with a cooler room temperature is the key to a good night’s sleep. (The 2012 study also found that people who sleep nude or semi-nude are more sensitive to cold temperatures at night.) With the mercury climbing as summer approaches, it can be hard to chill off before (and during) bedtime — especially for all of the hot sleepers out there.
Enter cooling bed sheets. These sheets are specifically designed to help the sweaty sleepers out there regulate their core body temperature throughout the night without having to blast the AC or throw open the windows. Temperature regulation is key to maintaining a natural circadian rhythm, and the best cooling bed sheets may result in longer and more restful sleep (and who doesn’t want that?). In cat, it might surprise you to learn that the ideal temperature for deep sleep is 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you’re thinking of investing in a new set of bed sheets, then there are a few things to keep in mind. Below, we’ll share our favorite bed sheets for summer and hot sleepers as well as some key tips to keep in mind when shopping for new bedding.
What Is the Best Fabric for Cooling Bed Sheets?
What kind of fabric the sheets are made of is everything. Many sheets boast cooling properties, but unless they’re made from a single, breathable material, chances are it’s just a marketing ploy. Opt for a set of sheets that’s made from fabrics such as cotton, linen, Eucalyptus, bamboo or Tencel (a super-soft synthetic fabric also known as Lyocell), and be sure to stay away from materials like microfiber, flannel or silk, which can feel cool to the touch but trap heat during sleep.
We recommend using soft flannel sheets in the winter and cooling bed sheets made from cotton or bamboo in the spring and summer.
Best Threadcount for Cooling Sheets
It’s true that certain materials are more breathable than others, but the way the material is pulled together matters too. Thread count refers to the total number of yarns per square inch of fabric, and the best bed sheets usually feature higher thread counts. And although a higher thread count sounds fancier, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better for cooling sleep. Egyptian cotton can have cooling properties for example, but only at lower thread counts. If it’s cooling sheets you seek, The National Sleep Foundation recommends sets between a 200-400 thread count. Keep in mind that anything over 500 will be less breathable, and therefore retain more heat.
Consider the Weaving…
While most are familiar with material and thread count, weaving — aka how the sheets are stitched together — should also factor into your bed sheet purchasing decision. Sateen is commonly used for cooling sheets since it is cool to the touch, but it can also feel heavy. If you’re looking for something a bit lighter and crisp, opt for percale, which is more breathable. Jersey and satin are other good, cooling options but once again steer clear from flannel and microfiber.
