Was there anything better than a Friday night movie night with friends and a trip to BLOCKBUSTER? They had it all — rows and rows of flicks to browse through, candy and snacks up front and that giant framed Batman poster your mom wouldn’t let you buy. It was the best, and then streaming came along and movie rentals in person became less and less convenient. Sigh.
There is still one last BLOCKBUSTER store standing in Deschutes County of Bend, Oregon which has kept their doors open due to the generosity and support of their local community. After closing their doors for the pandemic, they’ve missed their friends and want to invite three quarantine pods to spend the night in the store. So, for three nights in September, they’re opening their doors to guests who want to revisit the past and celebrate nostalgia for those “be kind and rewind” days.
This is a functional BLOCKBUSTER that still rents movies to the public on a regular basis, and on September 18th, 19th and 20th they’re giving the public the keys to the entire store complete with a pull-out couch and bean bag chairs in the middle for you to relax on. Whether you’re a movie lover, a BLOCKBUSTER super fan or just want to revisit simpler times, now’s your chance.
After each guest visit they’ll be cleaning the store in accordance with Airbnb’s Enhanced Cleaning Protocol informed by the CDC in light of COVID-19, so your safety and health is taken care of. The night also includes snacks, soda and pizza courtesy of the store for the ultimate snack experience.
If you don’t want to book a flight to Oregon right now you can also enjoy their Callgorithm movie suggestion service. Simply call the store, tell them what you like cinema-wise and a real human being will give you recommendations for things to watch during shelter-in-place.
