Although TikTok might soon become just a distant memory, similar to the fate of our dearly beloved old friend Vine (may she rest in peace), the app is still currently live and content is being created daily by millions of people worldwide. And now that Instagram is pushing their new TikTok competitor known as Reels, it seems that options for making short, creative clips are becoming endless — even if TikTok really is no more.
Truthfully speaking, when it comes to making a good TikTok, you really don’t need much. A stellar idea or a golden accident can both go a long way on the app, even if there was a minimal amount done to create the bit. But, some influencers and creators go the extra mile to ensure their content is pristine to the eye by adding various tools into the mix.
While some components are clearly more important than others, here’s what you absolutely must try out while making TikToks if you’re trying to get some notoriety on the short-video app.
1. A Ring Light
You don’t need to go above and beyond when it comes to lighting, but a solid ring light will do your skin and subjects some justice. Don’t, and we mean DON’T, go out and purchase one of those massive ring lights unless you’re full throttle trying to become a worldwide TikTok superstar. Get yourself a smaller, much more affordable option like this tiny 6″ ring light on a tripod — it’s really all you’ll need to get the lighting you want.

2. A Dirty Sense of Humor
While it’s not mandatory depending on the kind of content you’re creating, a dirty sense of humor is absolutely appreciated on TikTok. Profanity and humor that go above the realm of “funny” isn’t appreciated though. You have to find a happy medium that isn’t too out there in order to get a few laughs. We suggest brushing up on your humor with this book before you go full-throttle into the realm of inappropriateness.

3. Fake Tears
Alright, let’s be honest, you’re probably going to need these pretty rarely, but they are a key element to some of the funniest TikToks we have ever seen. If you’re looking to practice your acting skills and have been dying to show the world a comedic cry, look no further than these eye drops for dry eyes that’ll help those eyeballs get moist.

While we’re still unsure if our good sis is using fake tears or she’s just a stellar crier on command, here’s an A1 use of tears on TikTok…

4. A Face Mask
While this isn’t 100% necessary for TikTok, it’s absolutely necessary in 2020. If you’re making anything outdoors or inside a local establishment of sorts, you’re going to have to wear a face mask. And honestly, you’ll never know what you might catch on film.

5. Exceptional Makeup Skills
Alright, this one might take you a little longer to perfect, but having some killer makeup skills will take you a long, and we mean a LONG way on the app. Tons of reigning champs with the most likes and followers fall into the realm of makeup and for excellent reason, these people are dang talented. So whether you’re an actual artist looking to take your work to the next level or a dude that’s never picked up a brush before, pick something up to create an out-of-this-world look or an accidental comedic masterpiece.

See if you’re able to recreate or completely bomb this look, though we’re assuming the latter…

6. A Fire Singing Voice
We get it, most aren’t born with it, but you can always work on that singing voice of yours if you’re so inclined. Tons of artists are getting a slew of recognition via TikTok for covers and self-written songs alike. Who knows, maybe you’ll become the next Beyonce.
