If you’re wondering how to watch the new limited series Underground Railroad, we’ve got all the details right here. The highly-anticipated show, directed by Academy Award-winner Barry Jenkins, chronicles Cora Randle’s escape to freedom prior to the Civil War in the south.
The series, based on Pulitzer Prize-winner Colson Whitehead’s 2016 novel, The Underground Railroad, is set to debut all 10 episodes exclusively on Amazon’s Prime Video on May 14, 2021. Viewing is free with a new Prime membership, which offers a 30-day free trial that charges $12.99 per month thereafter.
Whitehead’s novel offers an alternate history in which the Underground Railroad is depicted as a literal railroad with an actual train complete with engineers, conductors, tracks, and tunnels. There are a lot of bumps along the way in this retelling of the harrowing trials and tribulations of slaves who actually traveled the secret routes and safe houses of the Underground Railroad to escape enslavement in the early to mid-1800s. The story tackles the many historical themes of slavery and its history, most importantly highlighting key factors of America’s long-standing epidemic of brutality against Black people.
