It’s a big bad streaming world out there, with infinite options for TV lovers and cinephiles alike. But when it comes to top-notch entertainment with endless possibilities, HBO Max has established itself as a cornucopia of choices with more than 10,000 hours of very viewable content.

Not only does the service offer a slew of new and classic entertainment options, but over the past year it’s become a destination for big-budget box office releases—including the entire slate of Warner Bros. movies in 2021. Where else can you catch buzzy flicks like The Suicide Squad, Mortal Kombat and Zack Snyder’s Justice League from the comfort of your own couch?

Add in nostalgic offerings like the Friends reunion and about a zillion Game of Thrones spinoffs, and subscribing to HBO Max guarantees endless options for viewers with all kinds of tastes. Knowing that, no one would blame you for seeking out a few suggestions. Want ideas on what to watch? Read on for the full list of new shows and movies dropping on HBO Max this month, plus get an update on everything that’s leaving.

Signing Up For HBO Max

You can sign up for HBO Max on the HBO Website. There, you can unlock most of the streaming service’s content via a limited-ads subscription for $9.99 per month. Or, for $14.99 a month, you can access all of the titles ad-free. It’s worth noting that only those users with the ad-free subscription can access theatrical debuts on the same day that they hit theatres.

There are also a few ways to sample HBO Max for free. While the service itself doesn’t offer a free trial, you can sign up for a free seven-day Hulu trial that includes both Hulu and HBO Max. Or, if you’re an AT&T customer, you can also subscribe to the service for free under one of the eligible plans.

When HBO Max launched in May 2020, Fire TV was notably missing from the list of compatible viewing devices it offered. However the service has improved since then, and as of November 2020 Amazon brands are now included in the current list of compatible devices.

New August Movie and TV Premiers on HBO Max

HBO Max is wrapping up summer with the addition of a few notable blockbusters, including the anticipated (if not controversial) Suicide Squad follow up, The Suicide Squad. If you’re still not quite comfortable heading out to see it in theatres, the James Gunn directed-take drops Aug. 5 for subscribers and will be available for the next 31 days. Also hitting the streaming service is the Hugh Jackman and Thandie Newton sci-fi offering Reminiscence, in which a scientist uses technology to find his long-lost love.

Meanwhile, if you missed Godzilla vs. Kong when it dropped on the streaming service for a limited amount of time earlier this year, the flick is back in full glory for all subscribers as of Aug. 17.

For the foodies out there, Stanley Tucci’s mouthwatering culinary adventure series, Stanley Tucci: Searching For Italy, comes to the streamer on Aug. 24. And for those who need another comic series in their lives, the third season of Titans finally drops on Aug. 12. That same day viewers can also catch the second season of HBO comedy The Other Two, starring Helène York and Drew Tarver.

Looking for something a little more centered on the real world? Don’t forget to tune into the buzzy, three-part documentary, Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union.

Here are all of the major releases hitting the streaming service this month.

Other Movies to Catch on HBO Max in August

Looking for more titles to add to your watchlist? We’ve curated some of our favorite overall picks that you can catch on the streaming service this month.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

It’s hard to believe that this month marks 15 years since Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay first graced us with this race-car flick, in which the leading character constantly reminds us that, “If you’re not first, you’re last.” So now, on the decade-and-a-half anniversary, why not put on those old “pee-pants” and discover for yourself just how well the jokes hold up? John C. Reilly, Sacha Baron Cohen, Gary Cole and Leslie Bibb also star.

One Hour Photo

August 11 marks the seven-year anniversary of Robin Williams’ death, and what better way to honor the late actor’s memory than by revisiting one of his most unique cinematic turns? In this film he plays a reclusive photo technician who becomes obsessed with the family whose photos he has been developing for years.

The Omega Man

If you’re in the mood for some classic viewing, then now is the time to revisit this Charlton Heston flick from 1971. This month happens to mark the apocalyptic movie’s 50th anniversary, but some of the themes definitely still hold up. The Boris Sagal-directed film revolves around an army doctor who is struggling to find a cure to a plague that has wiped out most of the human race. Given the current pandemic, that feels somewhat relatable, no?

The Mummy

Now that Brendan Fraser has joined Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, fans are convinced this is his official comeback tour. But can it really be a comeback without a look back? Appreciate the actor’s full range with a re-watch of this 1999 action flick, or maybe even plan a mini-marathon by taking on the 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns.

Clerks

The Masters of the Universe discourse continues now that Kevin Smith has divided the He-Man fandom with his latest Netflix series, however most of us can agree that this indie classic is comfort fare, right? Invoke the good times with this 1994 romp, in which two convenience store clerks get up to everyday hijinks, inadvertently influencing an entire next-generation of writers and filmmakers in the process.
