Just days after Pandora announced its new premium on-demand streaming service, Spotify is making a play for new customers by opening up its discounted student pricing to more countries around the world.
The company says it’s student discount will now be available to students who qualify in 33 new countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Japan and Spain. Until today, the student plans were only available in the U.S., U.K., and Germany.
The discount drops the monthly subscription price from $9.99 down to $4.99. Students will have to verify their active enrollment in a college or university in order to take advantage of the lower price. Spotify is working with SheerID — an authentication and verification software provider.
On Spotify Premium’s student plan, users will have the same benefits as a regular paid subscriber, including ad-free listening, access to Spotify’s catalog of over 30 million songs, offline listening and more. There is no age limit to sign up for the student plan, which means mature students currently taking part-time studies or enrolled in certification courses could be eligible as well.
Spotify isn’t the first music provider to offer a student discount. Apple Music similarly offers a $4.99/month plan to accredited students, and it expanded the program to most major countries back in November.
