Staying up ’til midnight? Good, you should be. Tonight, you can finally watch Zack Snyder’s cut of the Justice League on HBO Max. Fans have spent years fighting for the Snyder Cut to see the light of day, and now it’s finally here.
This is no ordinary director’s cut, either. The Snyder Cut clocks in at 4 hours and 2 minutes, and it contains hours of new footage and storylines.
Starting March 18 at midnight (just a few hours away from now), the Snyder Cut is available to stream on HBO Max. This re-edit is exactly what Snyder wanted from the Justice League from the beginning before he was forced to step away from the movie due to tragic family circumstances. So, if you’re wondering, “is Snyder’s cut of the Justice League even different?” the answer is yes, it’s very different.
That is, unless you agree with Spy’s managing editor Tim Werth, who thinks this “abomination of cinematic mediocrity” should never have been released in the first place. (His words.) However, plenty of critics have positively reviewed the Snyder Cut. Mick LaSalle, film critic at The San Francisco Chronicle, says that Snyder succeeded in turning a “bad movie” into a beautiful piece of artwork.
The Snyder Cut restores the director’s original vision for the movie, which was originally finished by Joss Whedon. So even if you absolutely hated the heroes coming together in the original 2017 feature film, the new cut of the film is absolutely worth a second look. DC Comics fans can watch Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, the Flash and Cyborg come together to save the world from the forces of darkness. Justice League is Warner Bros. answer to the hugely popular Marvel Cinematic Universe, although so far the DC Cinematic Universe hasn’t proved as successful critically or financially.
