Coffee is a lot of things. It’s how we get up in the morning, it keeps us alert throughout the day, it comforts, it soothes, it energizes, motivates, and I’m willing to bet it’s one of the most popular morning rituals among people all around the world. However, while the ritual may be the same, the way it’s accomplished varies wildly between people. There’s typically a sizable difference between cups of coffee depending on which maker, machine and type of beans you use. Some people prefer straight black coffee, some prefer lattes, cold brew is some peoples’ vice and for others it’s all about espresso. Some grind their own beans and some people use coffee pods exclusively.
If grinding your own beans and measuring your own brew is your thing, a coffee scale is a must-have for accuracy. Coffee scales are similar to kitchen scales in that they’re designed to help you measure out the exact amount of coffee you want to make. If you’re into experimenting with different ratios of coffee and water in your brews, it’s time to ditch that plastic scoop that comes with the bag and get something legit.
Do I Really Need One?
Yes. Sure you could eyeball the measurements, but that means the flavors in your cup are going to vary widely. Some beans are best to roast at a standard 1:15 coffee to water ratio, but others need something completely different. It all has to do with the beans’ density and volume as opposed to mass. I know what you’re thinking — “am I really going to be the dude with the coffee scale, I mean — who cares?! What I have is good enough!” You should care — it’s the difference between a mediocre jolt of jitters and a top-of-the-line one. You decide.
What Should I Look for In a Coffee Scale?
You’re looking for accuracy. You should also aim for something digital, and two decimal places tends to be enough. Your coffee scale also doesn’t have to be particularly large, something that can can hold a up of coffee on a flat surface is enough. You’ll also want to make sure it has a tare button that can zero out the weight of a container as well.
Battery powered usually suffices, but there are some rechargeable ones that would be good for heavier users like a coffee shop or small business. Since there will most likely be water around — something water resistant is great and having a built-in timer is a low-key very useful feature for calculating extraction times.
There are also coffee scales that are more utilitarian, and others that will look great sitting on your kitchen counter. Thankfully, many of the high-quality ones are also pretty to look at, so you don’t have to sacrifice effectiveness for style.
There are also smart scales that offer bluetooth connectivity and allow you to track your brews in even deeper ways, the jury’s still out on whether this functionality is completely necessary, but we’ll include a few highly-rated ones in our list nonetheless.
How Do You Use a Coffee Scale?
The ways you can use a coffee scale vary depending on how you like to make your coffee. If you use a regular coffee maker — you’ll measure the ground coffee into the filter on the scale and then stick the whole thing into the machine with your desired amount of coffee inside.
If you’re making espresso, you’ll complete the same process as above with a portafilter instead of a regular filter. If you plan on using a portable brewer, you can set the whole thing onto the scale, tare it, and add the coffee until the desired amount has been reached.
