We’re no strangers to weird food trends here at SPY. Fried chicken ice cream? We tried it, and loved it. Orange whiskey? Here are some cocktails you have to try with Jameson’s delicious new flavor. If you’ve hit a snack rut, it’s time to shake things up. The next taste combo you need to try? The sweet, savory and satisfying trend that is dessert hummus.
It’s hummus, in that its main ingredient is chickpeas, but the rest of the flavor profile has little in common with the spicy, garlic and roasted red pepper varieties you find next to the pita at the grocery store. The name “hummus” is used loosely in this instance, since the rest of the ingredients mirror a baked good more than a savory dip.
What is Dessert Hummus?
Dessert hummus is a sweet take on the classic savory dip with flavors like chocolate, vanilla, sea salt caramel and even cake batter. It was invented by a brand called Delighted By in 2017 and received $600,000 in funding from Mark Cuban on Shark Tank for its delicious flavor and innovative concept.
Since then, big names in the food space like Trader Joe’s and Sabra have followed suit with chocolate hummus flavors of their own, as well as a slew of other noteworthy brands.
It makes for a great dessert alternative for satisfying late night cravings, and can be used as a dip for fruit or pretzels, slathered on cupcakes as frosting or eaten on its own, like fudge or cookie dough.
We’ve selected a few of our favorite flavors below. Some are possible to order on the web, some need a brick-and-mortar store to purchase. Either way, dessert hummus is definitely worth a try in 2022, and might just become your new food hack obsession.
